iPad for Gigging

Hi Guys

Well I finally made the switch over from Minidisk to Ipad and I must say for anyone thinking of doing it would be well worthwile looking into as an option to a Laptop or Ipod which I found either to big or too small to gig with. I also tried the Citronic Dual Player which a few of the guys here use Jacqui and levi I think but I found that more suitable for maybe doing a disco and the display was also a bit small for my eyesight .


After a lot of research I opted for the Ipad so finally switched over and have been using it for the past few weeks and couldn't be happier. No more fumbling through disks looking for songs or flicking through songbooks looking for Lyrics. And with a 10" Display its more than adequate and it just attatches to my existing Mic Stand .

Lyrics are simple to add to any song stored literally in a matter of seconds you will need iTunes installed to achieve this they can also be made bigger or smaller on the fly just click plus or minus.

I got the Ipad 2 which has 16GB Hard Drive which stores as much as you will ever need so as well as storing all my own program material... I can store other music as well so gives you the option of storing music for a Disco or Karaoke Trax if your into that sort of thing. Of course you don't have to get the Ipad itself there are tons of other Tablets out there that would suit the purpose.

Hi Barry. My missus bought me an I pad for my xmas, but i havent got around to putting my minidisc on to mp3 yet.
This is the part that worries me . i,ve had a few tries without much success. I've tried the Cakewalk method with no joy and also bought an analogue converter, but found it very time consuming.
Is there an easy, idiot proof way to convert minidisc to mp3 if so i'd love to find out

When you say convert Minidisk to MP3 do you mean actual files you have on your Minidisk or midifiles on your PC ?

Well unfor either way theres no easy way of doing this ...when you say you tried the Cakewalk way what probs were you having ? Thats the way I done all mine 250 in total.

It can be time consuming ok but worth it in the end convert a few a day and you'll get through them in no time .

If you want me to walk through the proceedure with you let me know once you do one you'll fly through them you'll see. Actually posted a link to how I do it not sure if you saw it

Made enquiries about Van Basco apparently with most of the other Tablets VB will work no problem but Apple are very finicky on what you can and can't download . Another guy I know as I mentioned uses Karafun which he finds actually better than VB but of course like everything its a matter of personal choice .

Also meant to say your not confined to buying an expensive Ipad there are lots of cheaper alternatives out there very reasonably priced that would do the job just as well. Tablets can be bought now from $80 upwards obviously with no hard drive but USB sticks and SD Cards can be used instead from 8GB to 64GB which would fit 1000's of songs .

Barry, I'm intrigued as to how you set this up. I have one of the Citronic dual players (not used for gigging yet), & I agree they are more difficult to read, without my specs, than my old minidisc player, but I also have Karafun, & I've just downloaded itunes & the fonts on these are even smaller. How do you select your tracks using these on your tablet?

Glad you asked as I forgot to mention since I don't use Karafun or Van Basco (not compatable with the iPad ) I downloaded an App called Livetrax Pro from iTunes costs about 20 bucks I think.

So I assemble and layout my song folders in iTunes then I sync it to my iPad and Livetrax Pro and when I gig I just open Livetrax Pro and my song collecton is there . All my organising (adding lyrics,moving songs creating folders etc is done in iTunes.

Adding lyrics to songs is childs play its just a matter of copy and pasting into iTunes I can also make the Lyrics smaller or larger by just clicking a plus or minus button.
