Hi Everyone I am not sure what to make of Event Managers. We do not have as many of them here as there are in your countries, but they are coming on pretty strong. An Event manager is convenient for a host who has to address just one person to look after all his requirements. As for us musicians, we get work from them and its fine to pay them their commissions., but more often than not we have to wait quite a while to get paid for the performance. In quite a few instances, a post dated cheque is given to us and every very often the Event guy requests you to hold on to the cheque a while longer. Do you giys experience the same problems ? The Event Manager keeps all the payments on hold till he gets paid by his customer. I dont think this is is fair. personally feel he should pay all the musicians and workmen after the programme and collect his payment from his customer at his convenience. A commission is being taken from us and other workmen and it is not for us to to get into the nitty grittys of his deal or transaction We do not have to listen to his "sob stories" of delayed payments, etc etc. What are your views on this ?

My view is simple Shyam mate....if they don't have the readies straight away after the gig don't do it....alternatively i would chin them!! ;D (only joking)

"Chining 'em" might work but it might also get you locked up so don't do it, unless there aren't any witness ;d

I'm curious ....... how many of you use these Event Managers ? Personally, I've worked with them only thrice and those came in through my erstwhile partner. I've been lucky getting my gigs through my own personal contacts - direct without any middle men.

I have never used or needed an event manager Shyam, in fact i don't think any of them would take me on!! ;D
Regards chinning them, what i had in mind was holding them down with weegeo while Pat puts his expertise in Karate to good use.....they are bound to pay up then!! ;D
Seriously though, most of these "Managers" are just greedy little men. IMO.

No need for us to hold them down Tubbs just release the tiger that is Pat lol lol
back to the topic, i`m not sure if Shyam means `event managers ` or `agents`
The last time i used an events manager was when we played the `waterfront` in Belfast the e.managers job there was to look after the running of the show and looking after the artist`s needs and it was great fun
If it`s an agent well thats a totally different kettle of fish, unfortunately for most of the bands over here they have to use the services of an agent at normally a 10% commission i am in the position that i don`t really need to use them

Now, if we're talking agents I have had good and bad experiences.....Yes, they'll get you the gigs and in that respects they can be very useful but more often than not the bad agent will send you to places no right thinking gigster (did I just invent a new word ) would play in if he or she knew in advance what they were getting into.

I guess the ones I'm referring to are Event Agents, but they are known as Event Managers here.

Ahh well then were shall we start lol Agents== 10%--15% and if your really stuck 20%
Like Pat has said i also have bad experience`s with agents and i would only use them in cases of extreme urgency. Luckily that hasn`t happened in a very long time i have more than enough of my own contacts to make sure my band is kept busy. I have recently taken over as entertainments officer of my local club from a well known agent that was charging an arm and a leg to the club but was stroking the bands he booked for example he was booking the band for 350.00 pounds and took 15% out of their fee on the face of it not bad i can hear you saying but in actual fact the club gave him an overall fee at the start of each year to the amount of 18,000.00 pounds +vat @ 17.5% he took a commission out of this for booking the club and then a commission of his acts which give him a nice earner. Since i took over i have reduced the amount to 11,000.00 for most of the same acts with no commission taken the club is happy and more important the bands are happy they now get paid on the night.

A good agent, if he has any sense, will never knowingly put a square peg into a round hole - it's not in the act's interest or the club's or for that matter the agents. That said I know there are agents whose prime consideration is how much money they can wring out of each job with no thought to the future. I was lucky to find a good honest agency when I was running my band in the UK. Sadly he's now retired and I hear his successor is a totally different breed. These days, when I'm in the UK, I tend to pick up my own gigs through contacts made over many years.
Here in Cyprus it's another story which I'll tell you about as a new thread in a day or two.
