Morning Shyam,
Over here it`s not compulsory as such, but there are certain clubs that will only book thru an `agent` as roger has rightly said it`s not in an agents interest to use a band in a club that will not suit the purpose, that said the agent i mentioned above would book a dog into a cattery just to get his commission but my general view is most of the agents do a reasonable job.

Alot, if not all the Holiday camps/parks on the east coast will only use agents as it gives the camps some back up if the act falls ill etc, then the agent can find a replacement.
I use the agents solely for the purpose of playing at the parks, yes they do take their 15% but the money is generally better and the hours shorter at the holiday centres.
As other people have said, you tend to build up your contacts over the years so you shouldn't need to use an agent for everything. About 85% of my work is self generated with the other 15% coming through an agent.
As in all walks of life there are good and bad in everything, treat an agent with respect and in turn they will allways put in an act that is going to get them a good name. The agency I use have been established since 1969 and I have never had a problem with them ( yet ).

With so many good friends like you guys in the U.K. I'm sure I wont need any agents. I wish I could visit the U.K. sometime, but I know that wont happen as I know I wont be able to enjoy the trip with all the walking problems I've been having and I wouldn't ever like to be wheeled around.
Even if I did come over, I wouldn't need any agents ever as all I'll ever ask is a good well done English Steak with French Fries and Mashed Potatoes and I'm sure I could count on you guys for a good meal......... I'd kinda sing for my meal !!!
