Hi folks! I use a SW1000XG card and I use XG works to edit. When I get files that are sequenced in XG Format they are all over the place on my system. IE: Barry posted a file yesterday in XG format and it only plays drums and melody line. I also noticed this in other XG files when I try to edit after two or three attempts all it plays are the tracks I have edited and they sound terrible. They seem alright in GM. Am I doing something wrong or just plain stupid? Come on all you guys with the wisdom of Solomon sort this for me..........Gerry

Hi Gerry,
I still use XGworks and a variety of bits of Yamaha kit including an SW1000, although I tend to use its external box big brother now, an MU1000 with some PLG synth cards in it.
The usual cause of voices disappearing (not always) is that the voice setups get edited in before the XG system on message. That sysex message in effect kills the voice allocations, and indeed many other Yamaha specific XG messages.
If there's a GM system on message in the file too, and the voice allocations get into the sequence before that, catastrophe usually ensues.
If you send the file(s) to me I'll take a look for you and let you know what's up. You'll find my email address in the usual place.
Regards, JohnG.

Hi John..........
I use a Yamaha PSR-540 Keyboard, but will not play the XG file of Welcome To MY World. It is a XG keyboard but for some reason don't recognize the sound voices in the file.
It's a great file when played through my computer on vanBasco, everything sounds great.

Hi Kevin,
My offer to help is always open. XG is a special topic for me as most of the cards / sound modules / synths / interfaces etc. I own are Yamaha made, everything in fact except a Roland SC-8850!
If you want to send the file to me to my private e-mail as listed then I'll see if I can fix it for you.
Best regards, JohnG.

Hi Gerry and Kevin,
Thanks both for the files. In fact this one that Barry posted seems to be causing you both problems. Frankly, I'm not surprised (sorry Frank). It seems to have been created on quite a modern keyboard, maybe a Tyros or something similar.
Can you enlighten me Barry please? What keyboard do you use?
As such it uses a few SysEx commands specific to that genre of Yamaha keyboards and also calls up voices (I suspect they are some of the new "super expressive" voices) which may lead to silence for us lesser mortals.
These can all be edited to make them compatible with a lower level of XG e.g. an SW1000 or MU100. The structure of the file is otherwise fairly standard.
As a more general point I have started work on a new tutorial section featuring XGworks, for those who would like to delve into the intricacies of XG MIDI sequencing. I hope to post the first introductory section in the next few days.
As Arnie says "I'll be back!" Best regards, JohnG.

Thanks for that info Barry, It means I can take a gander at the manual, which I have in pdf form, and work out what's what from the Data List. It makes the job of conversion to standard XG easier. As far as the Tyros is concerned, yea, know what you mean. $$$$$$$$ I'd been looking at the Kurzweil PC3x with BIG eyes a while back, but it's had to go on the back burner. Maybe next year ... maybe not! Best, JohnG.

Hi Gerry, It's coming, it's coming! Yea, I know, so is Christmas! Done the screen captures for the first "XGworks setup" tutorial and started with the words. But other things to do have held me up. I hope to have a real go at it this weekend ... with any luck and a tail wind. Meanwhile I'm going to post the XGworks v3 manual, in pdf form, to box.net for people to download. I think I shall make references to it from time to time so that people can dig a bit deeper if they want to. Here it is: www.box.net/shared/g3asn95ei3Best regards, JohnG.

Hi all waiting for my XGworks tutorial, It's coming, as is Christmas. Sadly Susanne has contracted Graves' disease en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graves%27_disease. She is suffering from many of the symptoms described in the Wiki article. And looking after her, and doing the household chores, has absorbed all my spare time. She is due to enter hospital soon for radio-active treatment to the thyroid. We hope for success. All the best, JohnG.
