I'm hoping someone can help me save the last of my hair that I haven't torn out (lol). I've been using a desk top pc with a DB50XG daughterboard, running windows XP, with my trusty old Cakewalk 3. To get better guitar sounds on non XG files I was using Roland VSC. Now I've bought a laptop (windows 7) & I need to find a softsynth to work on it. The roland vsc won't load for some reason, I can used backwards compatability, but it tells me there is a file missing. Obviously the daughterboard is redundant, I had a trial version of Yamaha's SYXG50 softsynth but it's out of date, so I don't know how that compares. Cakewalk 3 is too old for windows 7, but a friend gave me a copy of Sonar 8, which he said had loads of sounds, but I can't get anything out of it, but at least I have something to play midi files on, (I'm no sequencer, I just want to play the files). I'm not gigging at the moment, so I'm on a very tight budget here. I'm trying to avoid external hardware, so looking for softsynth, I'd be quite happy if I could get VSC to work. Any suggestions, please?

Hi Ziggy,
If you've got Sonar 8 then, as you're friend says, it comes with a load of additional software. Probably the simplest is TTS1. Take a look and see if you have that. I'm not sitting at my DAW at the mo' so can't tell you exactly where to find it. I moved to Sonar 7 a while back and it came bundled, I'm pretty sure it's part of 8 too.
The latest generation of soft synths or VSTi and DXi as they are known, don't work in quite the same way as the older ones. I'm pretty sure SYXG50 was never upgraded to work beyond Win98. I got VSC to work in Win XP (I thinK) but I'm not sure it will work in Win7.
I'll take a look and get back to you. Regards, JohnG.

Sonar 8 certainly takes up a fair chunk of hard drive, & seems lots of extras, but I can't get any sound out of it. I can play mp3s etc through media player, (but of course midi files sound rubbish). I was using VSC with XP & was hoping that by using the backwards compatibility, that I would be able to use it with W7, ( I get a message saying that there is an install file missing, but it installed ok on my old computer). If I'm understanding you correctly, Sonar 8 SHOULD be all I need, but I've never quite got to grips with all this VSTi stuff.

Aha! John, I have sound! It seems the sound fonts (or whatever they're called) weren't loaded properly. There is one thing, though, I get this clicking along with the music, is this what people on the forum mean by a "click track", 7 if so, how do I stop/mute it? Thanks for all your help, Dave

Hi Ziggy,
Glad you've got it working. Phew what a relief, eh? Is this a very regular click that keeps exact pace with the MIDI file beat or is it more random?
I notice it's a laptop that you're using. Often this has an automatic power saving feature to preserve battery life, and this can sometimes cause glitches as it cuts in. As a general rule connect to the mains and cut off any power saving on the cpu whilst playing MIDIs.
It could also be to do with audio buffer sizes as well as a few other things. JohnG.

Hi Ziggy...... ... Maybe your metronome is activated in playback... go into Options/Project/Metronome /General and see if the playback box is ticked if so untick it worth a shot anyway...... Cheerz Barry

yamahaxg softsynth is only compatible upto windows xp try and get edirol hyper canvas for your virtual sounds also mixcraft for your sequencer with mixcraft you just select your hypercanvas as your midi sound and it will load up on every track in mixcraft the only thing i find with hyper canvas is the drums are not as powerful as the yamahaxg softsynth or you can always load xp on aswell and do a dual boot thats what i did on a spare hard drive for me laptop cant remember which installed 1st though lol

heres a update on this subject i forgot to mention theres a yamaha xg softsynth driver which will only work upto win xp but there is also the xg vst plugin which gives you the same sounds ive tried it in win 7 thru mixcraft and works great. i also put the hyper canvas plugin on and you can run these together in mixcraft no probs. IE you could have the drums and bass guitar playing thru the xg and the rest of the instruments thru hyper canvas then render it to mp3.When i get a min this week i`ll render a midifile to mp3 using these vsts and put a link up for you to download and listen

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll look for the xg vst & hyper canvas plug ins. I think I may have a trial version of mixcraft saved on a flash drive, so I'll try that as well.

Hi, Levi, only just picked up your message, sorry. Just had a listen & it sounds really good. I'm playing around with Mixcraft & Sonar at the moment, but Mixcraft seems to be easier to work with. Unfortunately the SY50xg plug-in that I had would not load (win 7), so I need to look for a replacement. I'm getting there slowly, thanks to you & Barry , and others on the forum. Thanks again, everyone.
