Hi Guys Just wanted to pick your brains, When I tried to switch on my main Desktop PC yesterday, I got zilch, would not even power up, I've tried the obvious and checked the fuse in the plug, but that's OK and not blown, tried changing the mains lead, also tried something I read on the net, disconnecting from the mains and them trying the on/off switch as I put the mains back on still nothing. It was working OK it the day before and I just powered it down/off as normal, it does a virus scan everyday and nothing had shown as being abnormal. So I stumped, I was wondering if a PC have any other fuse inside usually that I should check, or any other ideas before I pack it off to the PC hospital. The only thing I can say I've noticed is that it's been noisy sometimes, then another day it will be quiet again, I did upgrade the memory in January as I read that sometimes is an indication of the memory being overworked, but never noticed a real difference. I'm lucky to have a laptop that I can still get onto the forum with, or I'd be really depressed but can't do my music with it, my main PC is the one with the good sound card and all the software I use. I just hope it's not the Hard Drive , but I'd have thought it would still switch on. Anyway any/help ideas would be most welcome please. Jacqui

Hi Jacqui Oh PC woes where would we be without them.. ......sounds like your power supply coulda kicked the bucket or the motherboard if its the power supply it would be worth replacing but the motherboard might be cheaper to pick up a cheap desktop and install your hard drive if its still working that is ;D Hope its not the motherboard though best of luck anyway Regards Barry

Sound like the power supply. I had the same a few years back and it was gonna cost about $80 to replace it. I found a blown capaciter on the board and replaced it for75 cents. So if you have any friends with technical skills (radio/tv/small appliances etc.) get them to check the power pack.

Hi I finally got my PC back, it was the Power Supply, got that fixed, but now I can't get my External Hard Drive to work, it was plugged in at the time so I'm wondering if it may have damaged it, I can't get it to work on my laptop either, so not a happy bunny Jacqui

is the external hd powered by usb only or main supply if its mains suppy prolly the power adapter is goosed sound like youve had a power surge thats goosed your psu on main pc and power adaptor on external drive see if you can tell what power the external hd uses and try a universal power adaptor which has different volt selector. If it works with universal adaptor your always better getting one that is regulated only cost a couple of quid more

If it was a power surge buy a surge protection multi box, to stop it happening again.

Well the latest on my PC. Just spoke to the shop and the External Hard Drive had blown, they suspect because the power supply blew on the Main PC, so looks like a new one of those, plus last week my PC I'd just got back after getting a new power supply got a bad virus, and would not boot up at all, so that's gone back to be looked at again, it's got ant virus and I've not been on anything suspect, just Google and midihangout think I should give up on computers as someone up there does not like me maybe I'll buy a cat!

Hi Guys Thanks for the info, AVG is actually what I have been using, I managed to get my PC started in safe mode and run a scan, it showed a virus in the vault, so you would assume it had been detected, I emptied the vault, then the recycle bin and restarted but as soon as I go on the net, it all shuts down on me, going back to the shop again with it today. a nephew of my boyfriends who said he knows all about PC's took it and said he sorted it, and when I got it back the same thing was happening, he said it was a screen saver virus? but he'd cleared it, obviously not! As you can imagine, I'm starting to get very depressed over it now, the constant stress is really getting to me. I'll keep you posted Jacqui
