I'm sure all of you have heard or witnessed or taken part in the Indian Festival called DIWALI, a Festival of Lights. This is when India goes bonkers, IMO. Crackers worth crores and crores are bought and burst and everyone vies with his neighbour to show his wealth. Miles of crackers are burst and the noise is deafening and the pollution is unbearable. YET, the festival is celebrated every year, throughout our country. There was an awareness drive started by sane minded people years ago urging the school children to stop bursting crackers. This was a pretty successful drive and many kids told their parents not to waste money on crackers, but sadly, it was shortlived The festival can be so beatifully celebrated with "DIYAS", earthen (clay) lamps with wicks They look beatiful on compound walls. There are so many sparklers flower pots etc etc which can be used to celebrate Diwali, the Festival f LIGHTS. What pains me most is to see money being literally burnt. Crores and crores of precious money which could have been used to rehabilitate the lakhs of people who lost their homes in the very recent floods in quite a few Indian States. Do these wasteful spenders ever think for a second about those hapless victims ? Why are we such a heartless, selfish people ?Why are we so arrogantly Gross ? I hang my head in shame !

Hi there Shyam, I`m just home from visiting a `Diwali` festival in the grounds of our city hall and i found it very interesting with some fireworks going of and so on but it looked more like a continental market with loads of stalls from different countries and people being charged crazy money for different foods and knick naks. There was a lot of money changing hands but not to much culture i only went because you had mentioned it. So there you go a short report from the N.Ireland Diwali
