Hi Is it possible to separate/split a midifile with a medley of songs into separate midifiles for each song? If so, which software would be appropriate? I presume all info for the songs would be in the first bar so would this need to be included in any new midifiles? On the same theme would it be possible to just delete the songs/bars not wanted?

I would personally think this is a hard task, being that a lot of these medleys seem to change their volume, pan, and even sometimes the patch/instrument itself in the same track to different ones once the first song is completed. I guess this is done to save midi channel allocation.Second song comes up,plays, and again before the third song cues up,a whole bunch of control changes happen on one track to change for the next song. This is not the case with every medley, but I have seen a whole lot that do have this in the midi. I have not heard of any software that will accomplish this.
I just prefer to have each song individually that I can edit into a medley myself if I choose to,or I just leave the original medley alone, and leave it to the way that the original sequencer intended it to be as it plays.
Just my opinion of course
Take Care
Mike

Hi Mike I've done this in the past with varying degrees of success. If you want to send me the file and explain exactly what you want I'm happy to have a go. Eddie

Mike
Are you trying to extend each song in the medley or have intros and endings as well for each song individually what I mean is 3 or (whatever the amount) full midi songs ?
Extending or adding verses as well as deleting unwanted bars/songs wouldn't really be a problem but making a full midi out of each song in the medley as Mike says would be very tricky with all the midi parameter changes etc not to mention the various tempos intros and endings . Lets us know what exactly you want to do and we can look into it further for you Sonar/Cakewalk or any other midi sequencing software would help in most cases

seems easy enough Make several copies of the original file, load into a sequencer program cut and delete either side, add instruments, cut and paste to desired length, balance, add controls, tempo, rename and save.......Reload original file and move onto next song........Or request the songs here !

Many thanks for the quick and helpful replies. I do not need to to separate a midifile particularly. I was listening to a midifile medley and was wondering if it was possible. I thought there might be an easy way but could not think of one. Many thanks once again.

Mike
