Hello all...
I have a piece of music in WAV/MP3 format however, I want a MIDI version. Where can I get this done? Are there any online services that undertake this work and how much would it cost?
I want to be able to mute the main melody so that I can play along to the backing.

Hi paultomasi and welcome to MidiHangout
Wav /Mp3 to midi is really not possible not successfully anyway a few companies advertise this service but as far as I'm aware and I'v tried a few of these progs the end results were really awful and unusable. So I'd hold off for now wasting your money maybe sometime in the not too distant future it might be possible of course on the other side of the coin converting a midi to Mp3/Wav can be easily achieved but that's not what you want .
This particular piece of music you refer to is it an original piece? if not I'm sure you might find an mp3 without the melody embedded why not put in an mp3 request stating without melody you never know it might be out there or even the midi itself good luck.
Regards
Barry

hello freeway, thank you for your reply.
i am not concerned about any software solutions - i have tried many over the years and they have all performed extremely poorly.
my concern is a service whereby the original music is reconstructed into MIDI format using real musicians and real instruments.
have you heard of such a service?

No I'm afraid I haven't heard of anyone providing that service or if in fact it can be done at all successfully unless someone else on here knows any different

Ya frank that's just getting a midi made up I'm sure there are plenty out there that do that but made up using midi instruments not real ones.
MIDI itself does not make sound, it is just a series of messages like "note on," "note off," "note/pitch," "pitchbend," and many more it can then be played on other GM compatable devices so to create a midi file you would have to use midi instruments not real ones but I'm sure there are many very fine musicians out there that could create a midifile from an audio file and have it sounding pretty good albeit using midi instruments only .

Well being that a lot of the main instruments out there(guitar, bass, drums, etc) already have midi converters made for them, that wouldn't be a bad idea getting a bunch of these guys together to knock out some popular tunes in midi format, and then sell them like a midi programming company. I would think one if not THE main benefit would be that you can get all those little nuances, glide, ghost strokes for drums,etc...that a real live player could put in versus some keyboard guy tapping on keys for each instrument. I'd much rather have the latter, and I think that that is a great idea if someone were to put it in place. Not to mention you'd have some pure excellent midi files(assuming of course all the players are competant on their instruments to play it correctly in the first place)
Take Care

Ya agreed Mike def an opening for something like that esp something better than those those annoying kb guitar sounds it'd be great to have real sounding guitars .only thing is how much would they cost they'd have to charge a lot more than your normal midi files but I like the idea of that a lot of midi file companies are ripping off people with their very low quality and inaccurate sounding files and very bad customer relations (not all it has to be said). I for one wouldn't mind paying top dollar for real pro sounding files .

I think Stephen Kern at Trycho music played instruments way back in the dark ages of midi.Hence the large cost of buying them.

I don't know about that Frank but I do know he caught a lot of people with their pants down and pissed off just about twice as many who were innocent...Those lawsuits started spreading like mad wildfire, filed against all those people back then definitely led the way for MIDI piracy as it is today, and his company took a huge turn for the worse as news spread about all this activity. Having said that,I was one of those people who back then thought Trycho files were the shiznittle snapsnak in pro midi files. Bought quite a few back in the day on 3.5 inch floppies, even some on 5.25 flops..whoop whoop,oh the technology..lol Nowadays I listen to a few that I bought from back then and think..."What the hell was I thinking or listening to???" Some of them are not so good as I thought, guess I'm spoiled by some of these outstanding files put out today by many of these companies that sell midi sequences, and my ears have gotten a lot pickier since then... And if indeed that was the case Frank that Stephen Kern played all those instruments...well...let's just say now he has a lot more time on his hands now to go back and freshen up on his instrument playing if he chose to. Take Care Mike
