Hello all,
I've really grown accustomed to and know a lot of the ins and outs of Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for all my editing/sequencing needs...I am currently doing all my editing and playing from a WinXP laptop running CPA9 to drive all my outbound sound modules and drum machines, etc which works great,I don't use any sounds from the internal soundcard since it's so old and the sounds are really bad on it.
My dilemma is that now I want to purchase an up to date laptop..
One reason for the new buy is being a bigger screen for lyrics, another reason is it's got an outstanding soundcard in it...I want to start utilizing the soundcard in that laptop in addition to still using my outboard sound modules and other external gear.
BUT this comes brand new with Windows 10 preloaded as a operating system!!!
Now,not really wanting OR NEEDING to learn a new sequencing program, what choice do I have now that CPA9 is only compatible with the XP Operating system? Certainly not Windows 10! I never had a majorissue with XP even to this point on the old laptop as far as music needs,it's done everything I've needed it to do.
Someone told me that there may be a "XP compatibility" program, like an old DOS or shell that runs within the main operating system, that you can run on Windows 10 beforehand that will allow your old programs that ran fine on XP to run on the newer OS. I've never heard of anything like that and wanting to know if any of you out there have heard of that scenario...If it's true, how does that work?
I suppose if I have no other choice but to upgrade my sequencing program, which one would be the easiest to learn? I would also like to know which one is closest in operation to CPA 9,since my learning curve will be not as steep if I find it's got a lot of features that are the same or close to the same as Pro Audio 9. Anyone out there with any tips or suggestions on what would be the most appropriate action given what I've said so far? I'm certainly not looking for something with tons of bells and whistles on it,I am perfectly happy with what I have now,but wanting to use some sounds from a decent soundcard in addition to my outboard modules.
Buying a newer laptop is definitely going to happen in the near future,I just want to know if I could get around running Pro Audio on the new laptop,or the best sequencing program to get and upgrade to to install on the new laptop.
I could always continue my editing on the old laptop with winxp and pro audio 9,and then transfer the files to the new laptop when I've completed editing and such, but I would prefer to do everything on one computer....Learning a new piece of software is not off the table, just don't want to be completely baffled with not knowing how to move around on the new software...I don't know what sequencing program came immediately after CPA 9,was that Sonar?...would that be my best choice? if so,which specific, particular version of Sonar if you don't mind?
Thanks again for reading and for any suggestions or response to my situation.
Take Care
Mike
