HI Guys I have a Roland SC-D70 which I wish to connect to my PC (running Win 7 64 bit) and record midi tracks with Cubase AI4. I use a Roland JX305 as the controller keyboard and the JX midi-out is connected to the D70 midi-in which is in Midi mode. The midi signals are getting from the JX to the D70 and coming out of the D70 but there is no midi activity in Cubase. I have installed the D70 in 'device manager', I thought I might need a driver but there's not one listed on the Roland site. I've also connected the D70 to the PC in 'USB mode' but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Cheers Spike

Thanks for that Frankie The first link gets this message "Can't show the page because of parameter not found. Please specify the correct URL. " Second link - I've tried through a midi interface (UM-1) with same result - no midi activity in Cubase however The midi-out light on the UM-1 flashes continuously. I've also tried through a Tascam US122 interface.....just the same. Thanks anyway Spike

Spike,
From what you've described,it sounds to me like perhaps the problem is in Cubase with settings. Check your incoming and outgoing MIDI ports. In my opinion,I would guess that the "port" or interface that you use to record incoming MIDI needs to be active,or driver(s) are not installed or missing. Just check the midi port settings in cubase to make sure the one port or interface you are using is highlighted and active. Sorry for not having details and specifics as I'm not familiar with cubase at all. I also ran into this situation in the past running CPA9,I had MIDI playback fine, but would not record at all..My outgoing port was selected, but my incoming port was not.
Take Care
Mike

Hi Mike Thanks for your input. I've tried everything I can think of but the Cubase AI4 does not recognise the D70. I have found , however, that the UM-1X midi interface I'm using when in Midi mode (as opposed to USB mode) isn't compatable with Windows 7 64bit which is my OS. So I then connect Midi-out of the D70 to the Midi-in of my Tascam US-122 midi/audio interface, which is compatable, and this connects via USB to Cubase but still doesn't register any activity although the midi-in light flashes on the interface. Both in port and out port are assigned to the US-122 and are active. I guess I still have the option of recording in audio but I prefer midi as I can manipulate the end result easier. I contacted Roland UK but they weren't much help as they don't support devices over 10 years old. £$%^&* Thanks again for your message Regards Spike PS, I also tried with one of the other sound modules with the same result so it has to be at the computer end

Spike, I only see the drivers up to Vista OS...But I've read that someone installed those and had no problems...read below.. SC D70 Driver for Win 7 64 bit Download Vista 64 Bit Driver from the Roland website and connect the SC D70 module. windows would state that there is no compatiable drivers agree then go into device manager and update the driver from the vista 64 bit folder works fine... SC D70 windows 7 driver: Download the vista driver right click on setup and change the compatiability mode to vista and install works well. Thanks Mike - I'll give that a go Regards Spike
Later edit OK Mike I got the driver and installed it and I have activity on the midi-in gauge but there isn't any on the track I want to record to. The level usually jumps up and down when a note is played - it doesn't. So there must be some setting out in Cubase but I can't think what Regards Spike

Hi Frankie The keyboard I'm using is the Roland JX305 but only as a controlling keyboard (it is however transmitting on CH 1). This is connected to the D70 (midi-out to midi-in). The Midi channels of the D70 are selected according to the Part selected eg Part1 = CH 1, Part 10 = CH 10 etc. The midi-out of the D70 is on whatever channel the part you want to record is. So I select Part 1 (CH 1 ) and in Cubase the track (Track 1) I want to record is assigned to CH 1. There is Midi-in activity at the transport bar in the little midi activity window but in the corresponding track indicator there is no activity and on trying to record there is nothing recorded. In Cubase I have the track input as D70 Midi, Midi-thru is selected and output is D70. The instrument definition file for the D70 is loaded. I have a feeling there is something simple which I've missed to prevent the midi signal from getting past the transport bar to the track. Regards Spike

Hi spike
Def Cubase I'd say as your getting a signal prob obvious but make sure nothings muted failing that re install it sometimes clears up the glitches
Good luck

I guess re-installing AI4 will cure it with that particular software. Thanks Spike

Great stuff spike software can be picky at the best of times glad you got it sorted the latency issue is just trial and error you'll sort that no probs
