Plenty to chew on there for a few days John ... very good and informative explanation there.. tried to learn this before but got lost in a sea of zeros and 1s . .....but now it dont seem so complicated....says he who was useless in maths at school ;D goes to show anything seemingly complicated thats properly explained in lay mans terms can be understood by anybody...even me ;D...thanx again.......regards......Barry

And if you get stuck along the way you can always ask me to explain some more.
I was a complete duffer at school in maths, it was only when I went to a Tech College that I met a maths master who could teach! Suddenly my maths marks went from around 45% to 85%. Lesson? It often isn't you who doesn't understand, it just needs explaining in a different way.
So ... any of you who are trying this lesson and don't understand, you are not necessarily thick, or "can't do maths", you just don't understand the way I have explained it. Please ask and I'll try again. It isn't rocket science, really. Now if you want a lesson on satellite communications ... !

As a retired math teacher (middle grades) I understand binary and hex although I haven't really used them other than to teach students these other number systems so they could compare them to our base 10 number system. I am comfortable with this part. Thanks, John
