I agree. Down through the years they had some great sides but the administration side of their setup always let them down. They never had a great manager. The English FA always employed a yes man and you know what respect yes men get especially from Prima Donna's If Billy Bingham or Jack Charlton had had some of those great England sides there would be more silverware in their cabinets. (In my mind the jury's still out on Capello. I dont think he's a good one) Anyway time will tell..........Gerry

Speaking as a patriotic Englishman we will never win the world cup because we are not mentally tough enough. Look at the players Capello has to choose from, most of them would walk into any side in the world, but they don't seem to gel as a team. An Aussie was being interviewed after last weeks shambolic showing at the Headingly cricket test match, and the interviewer asked him ' what do you think is the reason England played so badly? ' His reply was superb and so true. He said ' the problem with you English is that you win one match and you think you are the best in the world '. Its the same with football, which is why we keep harping on about the 66 world cup and the 5 - 1 defeat of Germany a few years ago. We live in the past too much instead of focusing on what lies ahead. Having said all that and vented my spleen, I will still support any English side competing in the world, win or lose.

I still think that they have always had the wrong manager. English players never seem to gel under their managers. Team wise they always had quality players. but these guys never did it for their country (With a few exceptions) Jack Charlton applied for the England job and they would not give him an interview. A few months later he got the Ireland job. He took over a team that were picking themselves over the phone no Structure no money a team of has beens and players that thought that the reason they wore their National Shirt was to get paid. Charlton changed all that and under his leadership they reached the quarter finals World Cup. McCarthy took over and did the same and only for a certain person that thought walking his dog up the streets of Manchester was a better option than helping his National Side try to make the semi's. (By Charlton's own admission he never knew the names of half his squad) It didn't matter, he didn't need to. He was was a Quality manager.. Billy Bingham had the same Quality (A leader) England need a manager of these qualities. I said the jury was out on Capello. Maybe I'm writing him off too early, I could be wrong, so dont at your peril write them off...... Watch this space,,,,,,Ole Sweeney is now off the soapbox,,,,,,,NYTOL

That was a good response Sweeney if just a little [well a lot actually]off the mark speaking as an irishman i can tell you that both our teams [north and south]never wore the `green` shirt for the money they wore it for their countries honour especially the team from the north. I would say that it`s more than obvious that as far as the money goes England have the biggest load of money grabbers in football just look at the bonus`s that the were promised both last season and the year before sadly it`s all about the money with a lot of international players now. You mention Jack Charlton and your are right he turned the team into a well oiled unit and infact raised their standing in world rankings, sadly i don`t know how the English missed out on this brilliant manager. I don`t think England will ever make the final under a foreign manager the reason being they have never for whatever reason been able to play the `continental`system like a case of square pegs in round holes lol

I agree George, i think Gerry is way off the mark regarding irish players only turning up to get paid, the simple fact was the Republic never had a full team of good players before Big Jack came along, and while Jack did a mighty job on them, you must remember that he took full advantage of the "If you drink Guinness you qualify to play for Ireland rule"....also as a nation where both Gaelic sports and Rugby is superior to soccer down here i think we did ok in the past. Of course Jack left a great legacy, the great players we have now proves this and the game is on the up big time here now. Learning from the master, Don Revie, Jack is indeed the best manager England never had. Same goes for our cousins in the North, they give 100% every game, Billy Bingham was a master of the game too.

It was a great result and credit where credit is due i thought the umpiring decisions were very fair infact some of the decisions proved to be brilliant i hope England will go on now and build on this result and prove that they can be world beaters or will they just `live` off this result for years lol It`s goodbye Andrew Flintoff i wish him all the best in the other form of the game i think it will be a long time before we see his like again

The question is `can England win the world cup` well if they get the same refferee that got last night then they should walk it. Rooney should be awarded an oscar for his graceful `dive`i think if he had caught the other guy`s foot he would have been seriously hurt i think the `ref` was at some other game Just a few thoughts
weegeo---------------- taking his `ref`s`exams lol
