USB Hub

Just wondering if anyone has used a powered usb hub.
I was running out of usb ports so bought one of these powered hubs with 7 outputs.
Problem is some of the things I plugged into it didn't work.(including my mouse )
It was only a cheap one so I wasn't expecting too much, but if I buy a more expensive one do they work ?

I bought a mouse pad that had 4 additional USB ports,it lights up was only a few $ in Aldi's. Works great !!
