I have an old pc I want to reinstall windows on it's a Dell, have a disc for it, but what happens about the updates? do you have to get a disc to install them all up to the latest service pack which I think may be service pack No3. I heard the support is finishing for XP, so can you still reinstall windows on one now.

Hi Ziggy Thanks for the link, I guess if you have no updates, if it's from a new install, it starts them from service pack 1 and updates what's needed to No 3 Jacqui

Hi Jacqui, If you haven't already got service packs 1a and 2 (and 3) then you can go here to download them. windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/service-packs-download#sptabs=xpYou can't install SP3 until you have at least SP1a, preferably SP2 installed. Then you can download and install SP3. After that there are many updates to bring XP up to the latest security level. In the end I believe it worth it. I still run my main PC on Win XP SP3, and so far ... Kind regards, JohnG.

Just in the process of trying to reinstall windows xp on an old spare pc, when I started the set up I followed instructions to format C drive, but I think it has set it up on a 2nd partition, I wanted a complete new reinstall, I followed instructions on the Dell site, but it never mentioned the delete part, it's almost finished the set up as I did not want to stop it while running, but the hard drive is only 40 gb so I really wanted a complete new install, reading the net it looks like I should have pressed on D Delete first and then format, what do I do now? help Jacqui

Just managed to reinstall windows xp on a spare pc, not enough memory or hard drive for windows 7/8 but can't get it to auto update any service packs, I think Microsoft stopped it, and I can't get it to start on the pc, also tried the fix it from Microsoft but it won't work with service pack one and explorer 6 which is all that's on it now, looked on the Microsoft site and can only find this link www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=28but that seems to be Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers, I just want it for one pc, a Dell running windows xp professional. I asked in PC world yesterday and as you can imagine they were not much help, and said it's not available from Microsoft anymore and to get it as a download from a third party, he said Google it, but I can't find anything that looks like what I need service pack 2 and then service pack 3, Any one got any ideas might help me Thanks Jacqui

Hi Guys I managed to get the service pack downloads from that site last night( thanks Frankie) got sp2 and sp3, all seems to be working ok, so that's a relief, only got one problem on the keyboard can't get the @ symbol to type, so not sure how to deal with that, I will change the keyboard later to see if it works, but it was working ok before, so I think it's a setting somewhere. It's not my main pc, but a shame to bin it, and we have a few things won't work on windows 7. Thanks for the help Frankie Barry John Ziggy Jacqui

Try holding down the cap lock on the right (thinks that's what its called) and no 2 at the same time .......you'll prob need to change your kb settings it might be set to US instead of GB.
