This morning I came across a post which took me to a site where it's possible (and legal) to download a piece of DAW software called Presonus Studio One Free. studioone.presonus.com/free/No doubt that it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the "paid for" version, and I haven't tried it myself so am unable to recommend it. But it has had some good reviews in various places. So it's caveat emptor. Or better, let the downloader beware. There's a review of the free version in SoS here: www.soundonsound.com/news?NewsID=14930, and plenty of other information on the product to be found by searching the SoS site. Regards, JohnG.

Hi John Only just came across this post. I have a post on here, posted almost a year previous to your own post; can't remember what I put on there now (and can't be pestered to look). BUT, I have this DAW (S1) and it's brilliant - comes with all sorts of the aforementioned bells and whistles. It has many free virtual instruments (you can't load your own in the free version), loops etc. and there is no reason why it shouldn't fulfill most needs, unless you're a totally dedicated recording engineer, which I ain't. I still use it, even though I have a paid for DAW called Samplitude. Then again I still mostly use Kristal because it was the first DAW I ever had, it's the love of my life, it's really easy to use and it's good. I also do loads of importing my recorded trax from other DAWs into Kristal for mixing purposes. What can I say? I like it. However, going back to S1, I can heartily recommend it, but I do feel it can be a bit intimidating to the newcomer (which I will always be - I don't use it enough to get really familiar with it). As always, Take care, Bri
