Can anyone out there let me into the secret of how to yodel. I have been trying on and off to yodel for a while and cant do it. Is it just one of those things that you can either do or cant do.
I cant afford a visit to the Swiss Alps for some lessons either !!!

Hi Oliver,
It's done by switching between the normal and the falsetto voice. All I can tell you is that it is a process that happens at the back of the throat. Since I can sing a little counter-tenor, it is a normal process for me, but it is something that I discovered I could do without really knowing the process.
Yodelling is being able to switch rapidly between the falsetto and the normal voice. Practice is what makes you good at it. Starting with slow switches and keeping them in tune an octave apart and going on from there. I guess if you can't find a falsetto voice then it's a problem. I've always been able to do that since my voice broke, but then I sang treble and descant as a schoolboy in the choir.
Dunno if that helps? JohnG.

Hi Ian After looking at the link to the Yodel Course I think I may have worked out why you can't get the hang of yodeling yet, you need to move to one of the following places, Telluride, Colorado Santa Fe, New Mexico Taos, New Mexico Sedona, Arizona They are Hot (well not so Hot!) spots to Yodel, maybe the weather is just not right in Essex Jacqui

I do a few yodelling songs and they always get to the audience. Didn't learn to yodel , kinda came naturally. Its tough to yodel with a hoarse throat and there are many times when I use the yodelling test to see if I'm "okay" enough to see through a gig.

Oliver
I used to do Frank Ifields "she taught me to yodel' then i would split my audience and get them to have a go. A real crowd pleaser. Like Shyam I listened to Frank Ifield and the Scottish singer Andy Devine till I understood what they were doing and then practised. Drove my family mad but was worth it.
