More often than not, musicians are always tagged with drugs. Yes its true that many musos, especially from the hippie era, did try various drugs and some developed a dependency on them. I have tried marijuana because my other band members were on it, but I realized the damage it could do and I somehow, escaped getting "hooked" on it. I always get my "highs" from music, from singing and some cant believe it when I tell them I dont smoke grass, that I dont booze and that I gave up smoking 8 years ago. Actually, we dont need all that to enjoy our playing and creating music, do we ?

I do so agree with you Shayam. Back in the late sixties a drummer I was working with at the time persuaded me try pot. I found a couple of pints of bitter had a much better effect on me. One only has to look at the number of high profile musos who have become serious drug addicts and wonder if they started with the odd spliff. These days I tend to save having a drink until after the gig - maybe it's an age thing (as I find my capacity has gone down as the years have gone up) but I like to stay totally in control and know I'm giving my unfuddled attention to my music and audience. I guess some will disagree with me but it's worked for me over a very long career.

I agree with Roger...when I'm playing I only drink sparkling water and blackcurrant juice...it's refreshing and I keep total control of what I'm doing....that's not to say that anyone who does have a few pints while gigging doesnt have control...but I find it suits me. It also means that my wife can have a few drinks and I drive home....as for the drugs!!!! I never tried or had the desire to try them..it was a combination of drugs and alcohol that eventually killed our drummer a fews years back...he was found lying dead by the roadside...his death was the end of our band, we hadn't the heart to replace him, so we went our seperate ways...and in many ways friendships that we had built up with people we had met when gigging were lost as well. Another great topic Shyam and it will be very interesting to see how the response`s will go. I started gigging in late 1963 [ok i know i`m a dinosaur lol] and i went thru the whole culture of the drug scene as it was then in it`s infancy in `63`i was 14 and i was very lucky that my parents were always very `watchful` of their baby lol i played in `R&B` bands then and they were seen to be more certain to take drugs when i started gigging the only drink you could get unless you smuggled alcohol in was a soft drink or even a cup of tea lol lol but of course as time went on the scene changed. I can hold my head up and say that except for these danm prescription drugs i am forced to take i have never had any need for or used recreational drugs some of my good friends did and some of them i lost to cocaine and crap like that, having said all that i do however like to have a pint or several when i am out gigging now but i always keep it under control and i know when to stop i would have 4 pints of beer when i am singing and thats my limit i keep my drinking until after the show or more often at home. My take on it is simple if someone has paid a few quid to come and see our show then they are entitled to get the very best out of whoever is playing and this is how i have conducted myself down the years, not sure if this is what you wanted for the topic lol lol lol

As i side point to Shyam`s topic i`d like to throw this comment in the pot if i may and i`m prepared to take the `flac` lol I have a reputation for saying things as i see them and sometimes offense has been taken but i can`t help it lol. I look at the `famous` names and wonder to myself what on earth are they thinking about, we talk about `flawed genuis`s`when some superstar goes wrong and i think of George Best, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley the list is almost endless and we have lost these people to the horrors of some sort of drug dependancy [here comes the controversy] i can`t bring myself to call them flawed genius to me they are just plain wasters here we have people that are given a talent whether it be in sport or the entertainment industry and they have just `pee`d`it up a wall or shot it up their veins whilst the majority of people work hard to make ends meet we have these people who are supposed to be `role manners`and all they do is encourage the young amongst us to try and emulate what their `idols`are doing i think it`s time to go back to good old fashioned values in life and when these `stars`are caught out then punish them to the FULL force of the law and `bang`them up for a reasonable time. a point in case is Pete Doherty how many times can someone be stopped for being in possession of a `class A` substance and get slapped on the wrist with a very wet sponge if it was me being caught like this i would probably do years in prison. Anyway thats enough from me so the question to ponder is this ==Are they flawed genius or just as i suspect wasters. Hope this doesnt detract from Shyam`s great topic.
