Hi Guys Just wondedring if anyone uses a multi effects unit for guitar straight to the PA. I've tried most of the boss GT range and the Line 6 pod range. I'm useless with them and cant get any decent sounds , despite trying for hours. I use a floorboard with individual pedals thro an amp at my resident venue, but i've been offered some other work elsewhere and would like to get a multi effects unit to save me having to move my guitar amp . Any advice welcome Ta Eddie

Hi Eddie
I have been looking for a similar unit but have never found one that sounds as good as an amp itself. Rather than spend money on a unit with a decent speaker simulator, I would go for a semi decent second hand guitar amp. I use a Boss ME20, its OK in very small venues through the PA, but if you want to wind it up volume wise, I find the sound doesnt cut through and I am always tweaking the EQ to try to compensate.
These days I take my Fender amp with me to all but the very small venues. This is only my findings and opinion though, what do the other guitarists on here think?

Hi Ian Thanks for your comments. I've been doing some research and the vox tonelabs are getting some good reviews for going straight to the PA. But theyre not cheap. Its only for a couple of gigs so i think i might take out the old pod i have kicking about and see how that goes. i have plenty amps but i'm trying to do these gigs with minimum gear shift as i dont have a van, just a car. I heard a guy while i was on holiday in Tenerife recently and he had a great sound (no amp straight to the PA) but the crowd i was with were going to another pub and the taxi was waiting so i didnt get the chance to ask him about his gear. Maybe one of the small Boss ME pedals might do the trick. The search goes on-----Thanks again for your input. Eddie

Hi Eddie, I gave up on trying to go straight into the PA, I've tried the Line 6 Pods and Boss ME pedals without much satisfaction. The best sound I did get ironically was using the cheaper Behringer Vamp Pod! Nowadays I use a Line6 DT25 Guitar amp Cheers John

Thanks John, I've just bought a Line 6 HD 500 and although i haven't tried a whole gig with it ,the sounds are quite impressive. Only down side is trying to programme it, like all the rest of these multi effects pedals, they're very hard to get your head around. I find I can get some pretty good sounds at home through my small practice amp, but when I put them through the PA they sound totally different. But, I'm slowly getting to grips with this one . With some help from You Tube tutorials etc. i'm beginning to understand how to get the sounds i'm looking for. I'm still using my Fender Twin and if I get gigs away from my resident one I use a marshall MG, very light weight and sounds are acceptable . regards Eddie

I was lucky enough to pick up a real bargain on ebay, it's a Boss BE-5 pedal board, it's 4 high end Boss pedals in one unit, chorus, delay, overdrive, a noise supressor which gets rid of any hissing sounds from the amp and the best compressor I've ever had, great for lead breaks. There is no programming involved and effects can be mixed, I'd never be without it, it cost me just under £40 postage included, a fantastic bargain

Yes Bob, i had one of these a few years back. Great wee units, but not very good straight through to desk. I'm happy with the Line 6 HD500, it took a bit getting used to and i still haven't mastered it, but it has some great sounds. Thanks for your input.
