Hi Guys A friend has asked to help him sort a way to record some music to his pc, I know he does not have a music soundcard just the bog-standard on-board one, I know there are plenty of free ones around, but hope some one can recommend one they they have tried, it would only be for Music and tracks probably no longer than 5 minutes long each. He wants to record into the pc some mini discs so he can have them as MP3's on the PC and also some streaming music, it has to be easy peasy as he's not very technical either. Any Ideas on Free ones Jacqui

Hi Jacqui I s'pose your friend will be sorted by now, but just saw this. I see Tiny recommended Kristal. Absolutely brilliant and free. I use it for all my recordings. So simple to use too. However, as far as I know, you can't record directly from Spotify to it. To do anything like that, I record over onto my minidisc player and then back onto the computer. Bit long winded but it works. As always, Take care, Bri

Hi Bri Do you mean through your minidsik player to pc or do you record onto minidisk first and then back into pc?? The way I do it is something similar using Mixcraft but I suppose this can be achieved with any sequencer . I just record from my SC output to Minidisk out to SC Input just hit play on Spotify and record on sequencer. I suppose thats the way you do it as well. Rgds Barry

I never managed to get it working right on Audacity, was trying it on my friends laptop and all you got was all the sounds from the room, and other sounds from the laptop, I also tried taking a line out of the speaker out to the mic in and that was even worse, recorded the sounds but a load of noise over the top. Even to record in to Audacity from mini disc I got loads of background noise, so I don't know what was wrong there. I wonder is the software easier with Kristol or Mixcraft, i thought Kristol was a pay software though. Jacqui

Hi Jacqui As I said in my previous post, Kristal is soooooo easy to record with - it has to be if I can use it. However, you now have to get the download through cnet as the old Kristal link doesn't work anymore, although the Kristal manual is still on the Kreatives (the real name for Kristal) website. I can't recommend it any more highly than to say again that I use it for all my recording needs, whatever they may entail. However, it only records to WAV and Ogg Vorbis...whatever that is??? I don't like Audacity. I didn't like the sound of the conversions to MP3, so stopped using it and bought a prog called Vinyl Studio, which is cheap enough and does great conversions. Once again, Take care, Bri ps Don't worry...Kristal really is free - and it's brilliant. One of my own recordings on it, to demonstrate: soundcloud.com/bripes/theme-and-variation
