Hi All Just popping in to whisper hello, I've been off since last Saturday with Laryngitis, did a gig Saturday night, was singing like a lark in the first half, went back after the break and my voice had gone, just like someone had flicked a switch!, tried for an hour and all I could get out was Dalek type sounds, lucky my duo partner could take over, it was frightening, got a hot lemon drink from the bar, tried vocal sweets, but it would not come back, by the time I got home had no voice, Sunday got cancelled, so did Monday, and Tuesday I saw the doctor she said don't speak let alone sing for the next week that's all my Christmas Parties now cancelled this week, anyone ever had that happen to them, I've no cold, or fever, she said it's an infection and picks sensitive areas which for me is the voice box, she had a lady in earlier does telephone sales with just the same thing, hope none of you get it, so I won't be giving any of you Christmas Kisses just in case. opps sorry too late! The only upside is my boyfriend thinks it's great I can't speak much Jacqui

Yes I have a supply of those and every other sweet you can get in my medicine/hand bag, no affect at all, that's when I started to worry!

Or try the oldest trick, Jacqui,
Gargling three times a day with warm, very slightly salty water. 1/4 of a teaspoon dissolved in a full glass of warm water. Gargle spit, gargle spit, use it all. Not very pleasant but it works for me. Salt kills most bacteria of this kind.
I also make my own hot honey and lemon drink. Honey has antibacterial properties too and is soothing. Honey dissolved in warm water with a slice of lemon squeezed and dropped into it. Tastes good too.
I've had problems with voice since I was a child and have always relied on these method. As soon as I catch a cold the voice starts to disappear. These tricks tend to catch it quickly. At least they do for me.
Hope you get well soon. And I'm working on a tutorial for you. Soon I hope.
Kind regards, JohnG.

Hi Jacqui Sorry to hear about that... I normally take a mixture of salt honey warm water and lemon gargled a few times a day and it helps me . My wife used to suffer a lot more than me from sore throats but swears by Rubex Orange 1000 MG Vitamin C Effervescent Tablets taken in very little water twice a day. Anytime she feels cold symtoms coming on she starts a course of this and it works every time obviously what works for some don't neccessarily work for all but just another option anyway if all else fails. Hope your better soon hate silence around the house ..ha ha Regards Barry

Kind regards, JohnG. Sometimes these old remedies are the best. I use both of these, John, & when I had a large back tooth out last year, the dentist recommended warm salty water, not some new fangled treatment. Cheap, effective treatment.

I have only had it happen to me once, and I am afraid there is absolutely nothing that can be done Jacqui. Even when I had my talking voice back, my singing voice only lasted about an hour at a gig. Dont try too many high notes when you do start singing again.
Ah, the sound of silence in your household at the moment. Is your boyfriend carrying the germs in his wallet for use at a later stage?

Thanks for all the advise guys, been trying the honey and lemon, and also some Berocca which is an Effervescent Tablet with high vitamin C so similar I'd imagine to the Rubix, also been steaming which does seem to help also, not tried the salt gargle so might try that today. I too have always suffered with my throat, but never this bad It's very hard not to talk too much at home, but the family are enjoying it on the quiet (excuse the pun) I think. cheers Jacqui
