What is the most effective way of whistling into a microphone ? How can your whistling be heard without the pops and the whoosh ? I usually keep the microphone sideways, and though its okay, its not good. I guess it is a distinct art and I wish Roger Whittaker could demonstrate how. He's amazing !!! How many of you whistle ? Will you share the secrets of good whistling ?

Hi Shyam, I would just use a condenser mic overhead if you have one, if you don't they are not that expensive and have quite a good range of applications from use for capturing a group vocal (overhead for a small choir) drums overhead (I use one to capture a snare, floor tom and ride for our stipped back trio and it does a good job if placed correctly) also nice to add to an acoustic guitar (use the pick-up from the guitar in one chanel and add a little of the mic in another for some "air")...anyhow back to the whislting, maybe just borrow one and experiment a little, just try not to use them in the moniters to much as they tend to feed back due to their "lively" nature. best of luck "moonie"

Hi Shyam! I always had trouble with tuning when I tried to whistle. If I was doing it for a while it would be OK but if I tried it in a one off while gigging it always sounded out of tune.........Gerry.

Yeah I did have that problem, but it comes through if you really concentrate . There are days when the whistling comes perfect and everyone claps for it, but there are many times when there is more air than whistle (you'll know what I mean) and thats when the positioning of the microphone is crucial, However, the whistling comes out good , only, if its your lucky day.

Try this method /when whistling, make sure your top lip protrudes over the bottom lip by withdrawing your bottom lip which should make the air go downwards thereby not whooshing into the mic.Try by just holding your hand in front of your mouth as you try both methods and you should feel the airflow change direction. As regards why sometimes your whistling is better than other times, this can be caused by slight blockage of the nasal passage .Try whistling then pinching your nostrils and see if there is any difference. If there is then a simple blow of the nose or in extreme cases, try taking salt sniffs [put salt in a glass of water and iinhale up each nostril, be careful as it can cause the eyes to water ] Other causes can be dry lips in which case moisten them with a balm and finally a dry throat which can be overcome[ in my case anyway] by taking a nip of honey rum Hope you can find something here to cure your problems Regards Bigmike

Just as a side note to this whistling section, listen to the whistling part in John Lennons 'Jealous Guy' , its so out of tune in parts its painfull. Recorded before Protools was invented.!!!!
