Hi all, Just came across this site today and I thought some of you might be interested. It's an example ( not of my making) of just how realistic music can be made to sound using virtual instruments. In this particular case using just Gary Garritan's libraries, piano, violin and orchestra. www.dankury.com/music/WaterFountainbyDavidFostermidiarrangementbyDanKury.mp3It's called Water Fountain and it was realised by Dan Kury, a professional musician, producer ... etc. You can visit his site at www.dankury.comI have to say I was blown away by the staggering quality of his renderings (on his site). They could easily be real. Amazing! I hope you enjoy it/them. Regards, JohnG.

Hi John Funny enough going down that route at present with Virtual Instruments and was checking out the Native Instruments and EWQL Libraries, never even heard of Garritons . But fantastic and so realistic sounding you'd never tell the difference between the real thing and the VST's. I'm at present downloading a trial version of Finale 2012 looks like something I'd also be interested in being a Songwriter and gonna see if I can get some sample downloads as well. I'll let you know how I get on ..oh yes it didn't mention about a Player to actually activate the sounds like the Play feature in EWQL anyway I'll do a bit of research on that as well. Thanx for sharing the link Regards Barry

Hi John Funny enough going down that route at present with Virtual Instruments and was checking out the Native Instruments and EWQL Libraries, never even heard of Garritons. Gary Garritan has been a creator of reasonable cost, but mainly classically focussed libraries for some years. Originally they ran on Kontakt. For rock and GM instruments the EastWest Goliath, Fab Four and Ministry of Rock are good, but rather expensive. Yes, staggering quality, but a huge amount of MIDI CC events have gone into the realisation. Possibly months of work for each file! The full version of Finale 2012 does include, I believe, Gary's Personal Orchestra. Whether full or a subset, I don't know. I personally prefer Mozart for the scores I notate. I've found it very quick and easy to use, not fully featured like Finale or Sibelius, but good enough and not as expensive. Yes, the Garritan libraries now all come with a sample player called ARIA. Like EW Play, it comes as both standalone and as a VST. It was written for Garritan by Plogue and it's an SFZ player, which means that other libraries can be modified and played in it. The very latest version has an inbuilt convolution reverb too. I've now got the complete set of the Garritan libraries, and it's what I use for the few SMFs that I've recently posted. I love it. Garritan has recently been incorporated into MakeMusic, the owners of Finale. The libraries are all downloadable and usually cost about 150 USD apiece. Here's the link www.garritan.com/. My pleasure. JohnG.

Oh, and check out Notion 3 while you're at it. That comes, I believe, with a sound library (orchestral?)

John Downloaded the trial of that Finale program excellent prog but not for me I'm afraid a bit too technical and above my head and I'd say you'd need to be a very accomplished Piano/Keyboard player to benefit from it all. But the Garritan libraries would definately interest me and not too pricey either .....so your saying the Garritan and EWQL/N.I. etc.Samples could all be played through this Aria player is it ? If so rather than just sticking to one company I could mix and mash different samples from other Libraries which would be ideal. I'll check out the Notion 3 later as well and see how I go. Thanx again for your advice and links Barry

Yea, I tried it and found it quite a heavyweight. Fine if you're after high quality printed notation, like Sibelius. I'm not. No, a misunderstanding, or maybe lack of explanation by me, more likely. East West have their own sample format and sample description language. It's not, what is fast becoming an industry standard, the sfz format. So it will not load into Aria, neither will Garritan samples load into Play. However, Dimension Pro (Cakewalk) samples can be loaded into Aria and the description files tweaked (converted using a free utility) so they can sound moderately good in it. I still use XGworks as my sequencer, set it to output to 6 MIDI ports (96 channels) using MIDI Yoke (I'm still on XP sp3) then connect the outputs to VST Host. There I can mix and match any combination, up to 6, of sample players I need. Here's an example picture:- Left to right, MIDI input from each of 6 ports, into a player of some description, then the audio into an EQ FX processor or directly into a reverb engine of some description, then audio to the outputs. Regards, JohnG.

Hi Barry,
Got your PM and will reply shortly.
Have you looked for Maple MIDI? I think that works with Windows 7.
The screen shot I took was with a fairly fully loaded 'host'. In actual fact I usually work with a lot fewer VST plugins loaded.
It looks complex, but one just loads the VIs and the VST FX then connect them, one at a time, to the correct input (MIDI or audio) then the whole thing can be saved as a template including, if you wish all the instruments in each of the patches in each of the sample players. Again it sounds more difficult than it is. It is actually quite straightforward.
Regards, JohnG.

John Many thanks for your email I'll be in touch again regarding a few questions I have if you don't mind . I downloaded Midi Maple and it seems to have installed ok and it shows up in the Setup menu. Any chance you might run through setting it up as per screenshot? In Mixcraft to access the Plug Ins I need to copy the .dll files to the VST folder to access them is it something similar here? Any help appreciated . Regards Barry
