Just wondered what techniques people use to remember the words of songs. Some people seem to be lucky that they can read the words to songs a couple of times and they get embedded in their minds.
Their are various things on the net re this subject and most of them offer different aspects.
Those with photographic memories please share the secret brain formulas involved.

My 5 year old grandson is amazing at remembering lyrics. If he hears a song & likes it, then the next time he hears it he can sing along. After a few listens he seems to have grasped all the words, (in a little class production at school, he learnt everyone's part & prompted them). For oldies like me, it takes a bit longer, lol!

Nearly all the musicians and vocalists I work with here in Canada have their lyrics/music with them. They would rather have them at hand to jog their memories than to dry up halfway through.Even songs i have sung for years i have had the odd time when the lyrics have vanished from my head.

I found a programme that easily adds the words in Van Basco, so all my songs now have the words appear, even if I don't need them. Can't remember the name of it at the moment, I'll check it out when I get home and report back

I used to remember them all, now as I have more and more songs I find the ones I don't sing so often I forget, so words from a book is my prompt, but they are getting a bit cumbersome, so I'm looking for an alternative, thinking of getting a pc tablet idea to put them all on, been reviewing the best options, it's only for the words so don't really want something as expensive as the ipad, as I'd not really use anything else from it, anyone else using a pc tablet could give me any info

I appeared with another band at an outdoor do on Friday night for the Olympic flame journey, and the lead singer of the headline band had an ipad attached to his mike stand. He kept scrolling the screen down on certain songs, then I reallised that he had the words to all his songs on the screen in front of him. I'd not seen that before.
I spoke to him afterwards and he admitted that he struggles with some songs and that his wife had given him the idea of scrolling down with the ipad.

I have four books with me with lyrics in Size 24 font !!! Usually they are there for "moral support" ! I remember most of them , but cant take any chances. We are old and I guess we can be forgiven. I miss the days when I knew more than a thousand songs by heart. I am very amused to see young fellers depending on lyric books - the difference is that they have them in their mobile phone !! Good eyes !!! They look kinda silly looking at the small mobile screens and singing. I think it looks rude too , cos it looks like they are reading SMSes while singing.

My 7 year old son, 12 year old daughter and even my wife are always singing songs that they know the words to. I just don't get it. These are the latest songs, which in the majority of cases I have never even heard - and I think we spend most of our time together. So the question is, not only how do they know the words to these songs, but where do they hear them? I used to know the words to loads of songs...just had to learn 'em, but it was quite easy back then. Since retirement, I can't remember anything, so can't offer any advice, I'm afraid. Just stick with it, I s'pose. As always, Take care, Bri

I have come to the conclusion recently that as long as you do the first verse and chorus correct, most people don't know the second and third verse. Moving tact slightly, does any one remember the old minister for Wales, John Redwood, a few years ago attempting to sing the Welsh national anthem in Welsh. He had plainly not learnt the words and it was hilarious to watch. A cringe worthy moment.
