Folks
Ive been using a Laptop for some time, to play bot Midi, and MP3 files. I use an external soundcard, for better performance.
Lately, since the laptop is getting on in years, its been acting strangely, so Ive decided I need to replace it. Before I do, Id welcome any suggestions as to aletrnatives to a laptop. Please bear in mind that Ive got used to having Lyrics displayed....its not that I read them all the time, but the old memory is not as good as it used to be, so its a comfort to be able to refer to Lyrics.
I am aware of products like Merish Plus Midi/MP3 player, but the cost is prohibitive. Ideally, something in the range of a good laptop would suit.
Any advice will be welcome.

Keep the laptop and its operating system and uninstall eveything else that is not needed caculator and other software including virus data base etc. Dont use it on the net after that. Run a disc cleanup and defrag. This should sort it out for you.Use it soley for midis and mp3.

Hi Jerry,
I'm with Frankie on this one. A laptop which has been optimised for MIDI playback, that is get rid of anything not directly connected with MIDI file playback, is the way to go. Remember we were running MIDI with no glitches on the Atari ST way back. Windows 98, 2000 or XP is all that is needed. No need for huge dollops or RAM or multi gigahertz processors.
As Frankie has again suggested, clear it down, make sure you have enough space on the C:/ drive, and defragment it (there's a rather good free one called Defraggler out there). Uninstall applications you no longer use. etc.

Hi Jerry....... Good advice from the guys there are other options out there but for lyrics which is important for you I'd also stick to a laptop, I know a guy using a bare bones laptop just for his midis wavs mp3's disco sets setlists and lyrics etc and the machine is over 10 years old.? Btw when you say acting strangely in what way ? I came across this bit of software that I'm looking at maybe it might be of interest to you also check out part 2 of the video on the right hand side..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvDR6SgH410&feature=channel&list=UL Cheerz Barry

Showplay has been around for a while now so all bugs ironed out.I still prefer win 98 Cakewalk 3 and the media player [for CD player]. Can run an ext screen for duos etc fitted into an old monitor box on the floor in front of you.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Guess Im sticking with a Laptop, but, Im afraid, its gonna be a new one. The Screen on my old one had been flickering, and on Monday, while uploading some new stuff, it went blank. I brought it to my regular service guy, who informed me that the processor had also gone, and that it would cost pretty much similiar to a new basic one, to resolve. It was about 9 yrs old, and had done a lot of work, so I guess I cant complain. Excuse now to get something that will keep me going for some time.

It costs about 275 Aus dollars. Id appreciate your verdict, but, from what I can see, Vanbasco delivers a pretty similiar pagkage.
