Hi Eddie,
I've sent you an email with some observations and thoughts and a file with a very minor tweak to try.
It plays okay on my system too. Not a SysEx problem, only one GS On that I can see. Pitch bends and expression controllers are suitably thinned out. It shouldn't be that. We're talking a JV1080 here which is 64 note poly. so I'd not have thought it was density of notes, but still a possibility. Try muting some channels and see what happens. Some channel volumes are moderately high, so much so that it constantly sends my meters into the red. Overload, clipping? How is the JV1080 connected to the PC? USB to MIDI converter? Interface problem?
Thinking aloud! JohnG.

Yes John, I played the file thro my Yamaha keyboard and it plays fine. Could it be the usb to midi interface? or soundcard on my pc? I'll try by process of elimination and let you know, although it may take me sometime. Another thought, most other files play fine. Thanks for everyones help Eddie

Hi Eddie You could try updating the sound card drivers and maybe reinstall the usb to midi drivers and check the cable you never know it might be something simple causing it..... Good Luck Barry

After a few Trials etc. i'm pretty sure that the usb to midi interface is the problem. It wasn't a very expensive one but it did a job when i had Vista / midi problems. which interface to buy? I've no idea--can anyone point me in the right direction. I'd appreciate any suggestions

My own view on this would be to go for something which doesn't use Windows generic USB drivers. Again, my view is that they are pretty useless and designed to allow anything to interface, but without much thought of performance. My own experience has been that E-MU and MOTU provide good performance, although they are a bit more expensive than the simple ones. There could well be others that I haven't tried. I use a much more expensive MIDI and audio interface with a breakout box for all sorts of things, called an E-MU 1616m. I have a PCI one for the tower and a PCMCIA one for the laptop. Can't fault them ... so far! Have a good look here where you'll find loads. www.thomann.de/gb/midi_interfaces.html. Regards, JohnG.

Hi Eddie,
Another useful thing to do, when you've maybe made a short list, is to have a look at the manufacturer's web site to see whether they provide download links for the latest drivers. This is usually a good indication of whether or not they care about their reputation and their customers. An active help forum is also a good sign, where you may often hear about problems.
Remember too that bad reports can also come from novice or inept users and don't always indicate that a product is faulty.
Don't necessarily expect the latest drivers to be on the included CD. Retailers often buy big batches of product in order to get the price down. So what you purchase may have been sitting in a warehouse for a while.
Hope that helps. JohnG.

Hi John Yes, interesting comments. I did a bit of research on the Roland UM-2G. Which seems reasonably priced and comes with it's own drivers and they're downloadable on their website. I also got a very prompt e-mail from Roland asking for my set up. and explaing the problem i had,They said that the um-2g is more than capable of handling my needs, so i'm kinda being swayed to that one.But i'll do some more delving into the list on the Thomann site' before deciding.
Thanks Eddie

Just an update--I bought the Roland UM-2G, installed it today and everything is working fine, so it was the usb to midi interface that was the problem. Allls well that ends well. Thanks for everyones input and advice.
