Hi Everyone I guess many of you know about this contoversy abou the side effects of Aspartame in Sugar Free substitutes and certain Chewing Gums. I was given to understand that the use of these sweeteners with Aspartame causes serious muscle weakness. If anyone knows more about this subject, could you share some valid information, as its very disturbing and confusing. Many of us are diabetics and this should be of interest and concern to all of us. please share your findings

Hi Shyam, I was using the sugar subsitute which contains Aspartame until I heard (on a radio program in Sydney) about the after effects caused by Aspartame, and as such have never touched it again. There is a lot of information about Aspartame on the internet, all you have to do is search "Aspartame" and it's all there.

Steve, the information is available and most of it highlights the ill effects, but it worries me that its not een banned and its still being used in the sugar substitutes and chewing gums. The FDA could have come out with some clarifications, dont you think ? I'm glad you've stopped taking those substitutes -- better safe than sorry .

Hi Shyam, There are lots of negatives I have read regarding this artificial sweetener including people who have suffered MS and also Lupus like symptoms due to its usage. I have found a natural sweetener which is completely safe to use. Check out Stevia. It is very sweet but can be used in cooking as well as for you cuppa. Have a look at the links. www.stevia.com/ www.stevia.net/ I purchased some through eBay and have used it in my cuppa as well as for some cooking. Hope this is of some help to you. Cheers Lyn

Looks good, Lyn .... will try it out, but I think a little sugar wont hurt as long as we use it moderately. Good to hear from you Lyn . hope you're keeping well . Cheers

A bit late in the day to add to this, I know.
1. Why is Aspartame passed for use as a sweetener, having been through independent testing, in over 90 countries worldwide?
2. Why is Stevia banned as a sweetener across most of Western Europe?
Answer 1: Most of the scare stories about Aspartame started from a hoax letter. The claims of side effects seem to apply to massive overdoses or to be completely unproven. i.e. urban myth. But you get diabetes if you eat too much sugar.
Answer 2. Because in the main Stevia hasn't been proved by clinical tests yet to be safe in all countries. Although it has been used for many years in Japan I believe. It may pass its trials this year in the EU.
Just my 2d as usual. JohnG.

I stopped using and drinking "diet" soda about a year ago, went to a un-refined sugar (not white) and LOST 25 pounds !! That stuff is bad for the enzymes and "good" bacteria in your digestive tract.... I multiplies the "bad" bacteria which in turn kills the good 1 My wife had it so bad she has to take pills with the good bacteria to try to get her digestive system back in sync.... She started taking them about 4 months ago and is just now starting to level the bacteria out...!!
