A situation happened during the week that got me thinking, without going into too great a detail, I started thinking about obsessive compulsive disorders in music. Almost every musician I know has OCD in some form, all the musicians have different degrees of it and in different ways.
The drummer in the band I am in always warms up with the same fills and beats, and in exactly the same order, the bass player always plays the same scales to warm up. The lead guitarist will not play a song live until he has learnt any solo in the song note for note, he does not care about any rythem playing, just the solos, he also has to be the last person to arrive at rehearsals, and I have to set all the equipment up in exactly the same order every time and also pack it away in the exact reverse order.
I would be interested to know of any other musical OCD's that any forum members have or have observed.

Hi Ian, Like you I have to set up and pack down in the same order,I think it makes sure you don't leave anything behind,I always tune up and play the same rifts that I've been doing for years. Geordie

Hi Ian, this is indeed a good topic it started me thinking [anything that gets me thinking is good lol] in the dark days when i was drumming i always had to set my kit up in the same order i always remember if i didn`t i never felt comfortable the whole gig eg: if my stool was a fraction out it was uncomfortable also if my cymbal stands were`nt the same height or in the same position then was strange to play and of course i always did the same runs around the drums and the same hands excercises before starting. When i stopped drumming and moved to keyboard and PA setup i always had to do the setup in exactly the same order and right up to present time [though i hardly gig now] it is still the same
Defo: O.C.D never thought of it like that before very thought provoking indeed good topic

Thanks for the input guys, at least I know I am not alone.
Last night I tried to set up in a different order and felt so uncomfortable doing it that I stopped and started from scratch again. The weird thing is I absolutely detest doing any songs in a particular order of play, and prefer to wing it by only thinking 1 or maybe 2 songs ahead. I do know musicians that have been doing the same songs in the same order for years. In the band however we have to have set lists.
If anybody wants to facebook the band, put in 'The Whoppers' in to the search area.

Hi Ian,
I suffer a bit from OCD in ordinary everyday activities (like checking that I've switched off the light properly 15 times and hoovering dirt off the carpet at 11 pm at night when my wife is dozing in front of the telly!) but I hadn't noticed OCD issues in music as such. This may be because I don't have to make a living from music and if my audience at my one (two actually) and only (charity) gig(s) don't like me, tough. In fact, I find music a release or escape from the stresses (including OCD) of ordinary life.

Hey Terry,
You're right actually, I've noticed that I 've been getting more and more gaga as time passes. But not to worry as long as we're enjoying ourselves.
