Just wondering if anyone has ever repaired a full size Mini Disc Player, I went away at the weekend to perform at a Masonic Ladies Night with my singing partner, unfortunately while setting up my player got knocked off the table and fell on the floor, when I plugged it in it still had power but when I put in a mini disc Error C13 keeps flashing up on the screen and it ejects the disc, I could have cried when it happened, it was a four hour drive to get there and was such an important function, lucky enough we both use a player so that we can keep the music going without breaks when people are dancing, so we managed to get through the night with just one and a lot of stress, thank god we had that, but obviously not as smoothly as we normally do, so now I have to find somewhere to repair it, which is almost as hard as it is to buy one now days, just just wondering if anyone knows about this error and has heard of anyway to fix it DIY. Jacqui

I am no "Techie"...but I think it will be difficult to get this repaired. I had a similiar problem with my previous one, and ended up replacing it. As you say, they are now almost impossible to get.
I use a Laptop with the Midi player, so can also keep things going without too much delay. perhaps you should look at that option. Good luck...really hope you can get it sorted.

The guts of the player is mechanical and very intricate. I tried to repair one once (a Tascam model) but found that it was just too complex. The parts people said I would need to replace the whole "Mech" as they termed it which is the section which manipulates the disc. The cost was £200!! Now it may be something quite simple so you should carefully take the top off and have a little look. Perhaps something has just come loose. Other than that it's curtains for it. A second hand replacement would be the best bet and they are quite cheap now.

Jacqui are you sure its not just a disk error ? have you tried any other disks in the machine ? happened me a few times before cant remember the error code though and it turned out to be just a fault with the disc .....have you checked the manual yourself for the error codes and what they mean ? if it is indeed the player picked up this info might be of some help..near the bottom there's a remedy suggested .... regards Barry www.fixya.com/support/t349391-mds_je480_minidisc_deck

hi jacqui
i too had a problem with "error c13" appearing, but it turn out to be a problem with the disc. did you try cleaning disc? or using a new disc? as i found discs can get worn over time from constant use, i also bought a cleaning disc on ebay, works the same as cd cleaner, just insert and follow instructions. "touch wood" haven't had a problem since... now here's the part you probably don't want to hear, some years ago, my disc player fell, but as the other guys said, the workings are so delicate, i had to replace it...sorrry!!

Jacqui sorry to hear about your stressful time, if you cant get the machine fixed yourself, there are some on E-bay and you could try 'Loot' in your area. If you have no joy there is a company called Rayleigh Hi-Fi who do repairs, but they will probably charge you £50 before they do anything. If you do take the cover off check to see if there are any loose wires or cracked circuit boards or anything loose floating about inside. As a last resort try the Sony centre in Chelmsford on 01245 490726, or Visual FX service centre in Romford on 01708 381896 who are a service centre for Sony.
Good luck

C13 flashing usually means dirty or ruined discs or a problem with the laser....i had bad problems with mini disc players, the last one i had didn't accidentally drop...i threw it out, good riddance to it too, it'll probably cost a lot to fix it Jacqui....i got fed up with them and bought a Sonic Cell...best thing i ever did.

Thanks Guys I know it's defiantly not the mini disc I tried several others. According to the Manuel C13 Read Error means the deck could not read the TOC on the MD properly, take out the disc and insert it again... well tried all that without any joy, I also had quite recently cleaned the head with a MD cleaner, but have just tried it again and it won't even load that disc... so looks like a repair if I can find anywhere, I expect it's the Laser head that's damaged, I'll try those numbers Ian posted and see what they say. Thanks everyone By the way whats a Sonic Cell?

By the way whats a Sonic Cell? I use it to play my backing tracks when gigging Jacqui, as well as edit midi files, vocal recording etc. Just load your backing tracks onto usb stick and bung it in the sonic cell and away you go.....here is a link with more info... www.roland.co.uk/synth_room_catdet.asp?ID=SONICCELL

Hi Jacqui, So sorry to hear about your dropped MD player, what a bu**er! Eh? Here is the address of the Sony service centre in the UK Sony UK Ltd., Piper's Way, Thatcham, Berks. RG19 4LZ. Phone 08705 111 999. Hope it's still up-to-date. Or you could try www.sony.co.uk. I don't know how expensive they'll be though. I used to know a little repair shop in Letchworth on the industrial estate, who seemed to be able to repair almost anything; CD players, TVs, record players (remember those?), amplifiers, tape decks etc. But I imagine that isn't much help? The SonicCell is a sound module (put simply) much like your Ketron SD2 but with loads more facilities on it. It means e.g. that you can load your MIDI files onto a memory stick as SMFs or mp3s and play them at gigs i.e. you don't have to take a computer with you. I don't suppose anyone can guarantee that it won't break if you drop it, but as it has no moving parts in it (unlike an MD player) it is likely to be much more robust. Only problem, it ain't cheap! Having just had a quick look I see that there are quite a few MD players for sale on eBay. I noticed that one even had the modification that adds a start / stop footswitch for gigging. One of these days I really will get around to writing some more tutorials again! Like Cat, I have taken on a few more work projects and that has severely limited the amount of free time I currently have. But I haven't forgotten either you or Terry (Simmo), promise! All the best, JohnG.

I'm going to look into this Sonic Cell thing in a bit more detail, I like the fact that you can play MP3 as well as Midi, as 80% of my tracks are in MP3, any good links you can suggest for information about it, and roughly what would you say price wise they are? Jacqui
