Hi Everyone Is there a validity period for a copyrighted song ? In other words, are there old songs where their copyrights have expired ? Do copyrights have a validity period ? It would be interesting to know the facts about this . The debate still goes on whether I can sing a song which has been copyrighted and whether I have to pay royalties every time I sing the song . Any information regarding these legalites will be useful.

Hi Shyam,
Yes, there most definitely is, but it can vary a bit from country to country.
Essentially the copyright of the composer of the music exists for from 50 to 100 years after their death depending on region, with 70 years being average. N.B. after their death NOT after the piece was composed. So music composed in late nineteenth century, where the composer died at early in the 20th century is now coming out of copyright. So you're beginning to be alright with Verdi and Puccini!
There also exists a copyright for the publisher of the music both as a musical score and as a recording. As far as I'm aware these last for 50 to 70 years after publication. N.B. after publication. This is why Cliff Richard is interested (or should I say Sir Cliff?), because songs he recorded in the late 50's are now coming out of copyright, much to his dismay.
Any help? JohnG.
