Hi all, I have just decided to look for a new laptop to replace a well used old one. My question is can I buy a new laptop and replace the windows 7 with XP. This may come across as a strange request but I already have a desktop with windows 7 and I am not impressed, and I have loads of software that will only work with XP.

You have answered your own question. I am still using windows 98 as an operating system for my gig PC as I run Cakewalk 3. Better the devil you know.

you can put any O/S (operating System) on your new Laptop. If you happen to have a copy of XP it's just a matter of installing it on your new Laptop. If you do not have a copy of XP you can purchase it easily online or in any PC store. If you are installing it yourself there is a setting in the BIOS that needs changed. It's located under Sata Emulation. Normally in VISTA/WIN 7 it is set to AHCI (Automatic Host Controller Interface, If you are installing XP you need to change this to Seperate IDE Controller. After this is changed you will have no problems installing XP.
Hope this helps...

if you buy a laptop with win 7 and change it to xp you will invalidate your warranty go to ebuyer.com or novatech they sometimes sell laptops without a OS so if it does develope a fault it should keep its warranty i made my laptop into dual boot ie win 7 and xp theres a small util which lets you select what OS you want to boot up on the post screen cant remember if i put win7 on 1st or xp sure it was win 7 But you must partition your hard disk first Sorry levi2, but changing the OS does NOT invalidate your warranty. If you leave the recovery partition intact, you can recover to the original factory state at any stage, and you will be totally fine. the warranty on a laptop only covers hardware, not software issues, as described in the EULA of Microsoft/Apple/Unbuntu/UNIX T.O.S. they are seperate entities jointly and severally, therefore, never the twain shall meet in warranty terms. And i am quite sure you installed XP first, the general rule is Oldest first when it comes to dual booting

Rule no. 1, Levi, never, never believe what the @r$%^(*&(s at the shop tell you. 99% of them don't know their @rse from their elbow.
I bought an Acer laptop via direct mail a few years back with Vista on it, and ordered the XP sp3 downgrade package with it. Never been happier.

I have to concurr with JohnG on this.
the profit margin on a brand new pc versus a copy of an OS is minis for ferraris. Sales advisors are actually told not to sell you a downgrade for many reasons.
It costs the store in the long run to hold Xp & WIN7 versions of every brand and model They do not want to spend 1 hour telling you how to install it They do not want to hear the ultimate question "Can you install it for me"
in relation to a damaged MBR, that is a salesman suffering from Thomas Dolbyism - Blinding you with science. the fixmbr DOS prompt will sort this out and any inexperienced technophobe worth his battery charger could find this out in 10 seconds using google... even with a smartphone!!!!.
Not only that, but when you install a new OS over the preinstalled one it asks you to either delete the partition or format it. once you do not delete the order they are in, or delete the primary, you are fine.
the recovery partition is normally labeled RECOVERY (HP ETC). simply format the other partition and install the new OS without changing the structure of the drive.
Myself, i have a G6 HP with windows 7. I also use a LIVE version of xp for recording on the move, i have it installed to a 1TB external drive that connects via E-SATA.
