Hundreds of snakes have been retrieved from metropolitan properties in the past two months, kicking off a busy season for wildlife officers
Several days of hot weather last month and in September meant volunteer snake retrievers were inundated with more than 500 calls regarding snakes in backyards, work sites and local parks.
Almost every call related to a dugite or tiger snake, some as close to the city as Victoria Park.
Snake sighting calls that come through the Department of Environment and Conservation and a Wildcare hotline are referred to volunteer snake retrievers stationed across the metropolitan area.
Department of Environment and Conservation reptile and amphibian officer Matt Swan said the high volume of calls since early September had swamped volunteers and he advised people to be vigilant around their properties.
He recently removed a big dugite hidden under rubbish at a suburban construction site.
To report a snake, phone the 24-hour Wildcare hotline on 9474 9055.

I appreciate that the above article may be relevent already to some members who live in this type of envirement (Shyam) & a few more i am sure but i guess we can count on a bit of feedback from our Irish contingent whom it may be of interest,( i am not sure if the story of no serpents in Ireland is correct ??),
Having been a self employed commercial mowing contractor for over 20 years where a lot of my work covered rural properties i have lost count of the incidents i have had with the various species of reptiles, the downside is that here in W Australia we have eight of the ten worlds most venomous snakes, the other problem is a lot of new areas of land are being opened up for new housing developments which often leads to a lot of the snakes living in these areas long after the development has finished. The most common type is the Dugite,it is venomous but like most snakes they would rather take off than be aggressive ,the one exception is the Tiger snake who will not only stand its ground but is extremely dangerous,it can get to over two metres in lenth & its bite is usually fatal within sometimes just a few minutes if medical help is not close at hand.
Anyway folks just a little bit of local news so what about some more stories from your area on any subject at all.
Best wishes from the Simmo's down Baldivis way
