Or a beefburger back into a cow!
Having said "no way", which I wholeheartedly agree with (in general), if the mp3 file just contains a single voice or instrument then a moderately good conversion is possible. The Yamaha "voice to score" built into XGworks 3 could convert a sung tune into MIDI notes, if you could sing moderately in tune. In other words, the simpler the better.
The problem is just sorting all the many pitches from all the different instruments, not to mention drums and cymbals too, into their separate streams and, as if that is difficult enough, they are spread apart in the "stereo stage" and, to make it all even worse, the whole thing is then swamped with reverberation which muddies it all in artificial, frequency specific blurring of each instruments acoustic "fingerprint".
The last problem is that if the original audio file has been converted to mp3, then even more acoustic information, which might have been used to identify one instrument from another, is often removed in the conversion process.
There was one program I found which, if you could specify exactly which instruments were being used in the mix could, with a relatively simple group of instruments used, have a go at it with some degree of success. The resultant MIDI file always needed significant editing though.

The software which tries to convert from a wav or mp3 (I think) file to MIDI is called "intelliScore Ensemble." You can find it here: www.intelliscore.net/index.html. It's important to read the Faq on this page to understand what it can and, more importantly, cannot do: www.intelliscore.net/faq.html#Q1, especially with regard to drums. You can download a demo version to give it a try. The more information you can supply about the structure of the original instruments etc. the better it works. I tried the demo but didn't buy it. P.S. I see there's a new version with some added capabilities. I might just give it a try and see how much it;s improved. ... drum recognition!

That is a great post John. It would be terrific if this was possible. I have some amazing backing tracks, MP3s that I'd love to have made into Midi files.

Hello Guys and Dolls I have been fooling around with band in a box with real files, version 2009.5 recently It has a feature in it which will convert a wav or mp3 audio file to midi. I takes a bit of time. Im no expert and mostly can just about find the 'ON' button on my pc but Ive had reasonable success so far with a few songs. Once it has generated the chord progression, you can then select a 'style' which suits the song, go through it and add or take out any incorrect chords the program may throw up, depending on the complexity of the song 'grace' notes etc sometimes the program gets fooled a bit. When your happy with what youve got the biab file can then be converted to midi and bumped over to cakewalk etc for futher editing..... Found a bit of a thread on it in the steel guitar forum...in the Biab section...... Anybody else on here tried it or have any success with it?
Cheers
Vince

Hello Frankie, It doesnt convert it directly.....but what it does is create the chord chart and progression so that once you have selected a style in Biab which fits the song, a drums, bass, piano, strings etc arrangement of the song can be generated and converted to midi after that its up to the individuals musical ability etc to add to it or edit it further in something like cakewalk/cuebass etc....Potentially a great tool to make a workable version of a song in midi from scratch....takes some work to get used to it, but as they say you gets nothin for nothin.......... When I have something acceptable produced with it I will pop it up here for you to have a listen....... Regards
Vincent
