(Edirol) Roland VSC will be obsolete (if not already) when Windows XP is long gone. What program or hardware will take it's place. VSC could be purchased for approx $120.00 Aust Dollars. The Roland Sonic Cell is an option but at around $1,200.00 it's a very expensive option, any other views points on this???. I use the VSC in my XP laptop, but when the laptop gives up the ghost I will need to upgrade to Windows7 which Roland VSC is not compatible with.

Yes, I have a desk top with Windows7 and I can use VSC in XP Mode but that isn't quite 100%, there is a touch of hesitation when files are played especially with Cakewalk Pro 9

Try and score a tower with Win 98 or upwards to XP just use it soley for Midi files and Cakewalk. I have win 98 as operating system with Cakewalk 3 on a laptop soley for giging and sequencing. This laptop has no internet acsess and all irelevent software removed[calculator, note pad, games etc]. It has Van Bascoes and win media player for playing CDs whilst having breaks.I have back up files. I dont believe in having to upgrade all my "important stuff "with each new operating system. You can always transfer files from the net via flash drive. I also have my Kawai Q80 and Q80 ex to fall back on for sequencing.

How about a soft ware program or hardware that's compatible with Windows7 Every time a new version of windows comes out do you intend to buy software that is compatable ? What I suggested was a dedicated computer to use soley for your music software. Dont know what is compatible but there may be new software updates for your stuff to run on Win 7.

There are no working drivers available for VSC on windows 7....im using windows 7 now, my VSC is on my old laptop (vista)....as Frank said....its prob better to have a computer solely for the older music software....i bit the bullet and bought a sonic cell over 3 years ago....best thing ever. Back to VSC..as far as i can tell Roland have no plans to support it with new drivers, but someone may know how.

I use the Edirol SD-20. Works fine with Windows7. Bought on Ebay a couple of years ago for around $200. Plugs into the laptop via USB. I've been using it on live gigs for 2 years now. They still turn up on Ebay from time to time. 24-bit Digital Studio Canvas
Now there's a compact, portable, USB bus powered MIDI solution, perfect for your laptop. The Edirol SD-20 gives you the right number of sounds, and works with your computer no matter what its age: you can connect through USB or serial ports. And its compact size makes it easy to connect and create anywhere.
* Compact, portable USB Bus powered MIDI solution, perfect for laptop and mobile use * 64 polyphony, 32-part MIDI synthesizer, 660 GM2/GS/XGlite tones and 23 drum sets * 24-bit S/PDIF optical output * Realistic instruments tones from Grand Pianos, Rippin' Guitars, Jazzy Sax and Ethnic Drums * USB Bus powered. And AC Adaptor included for additional power support. * Easy connection to computer (RS-232C Serial port or USB)

Hi all, Sorry about the period of absence, not feelin' too bright at the mo'. The post that Frankie made, the first ref., with the VST version of VSC, or here: www.roland.com/products/en/VSC-MP1/index.html"Sound Canvas VST" is probably the thing you want. It's a free download, but I don't know whether you need a serial number or sumfink to activate it. It's worth a try though. JohnG. P.S. My mistake, that's just an upgrade from v1 to v1.1 or some such. It looks like you'll have to buy VSC-MP1. Thought it sounded to good to be true! P.P.S. It now looks as if they have discontinued the product! Drat, missed it! P.P.P.S. It looks like they stopped selling it around 2008. Oh, well!

Thanks for everybody's input, John! it looks like the SD-20 is as scares as hens teeth, no where to be found, (I'll buy yours for $50) Keep the comments coming, there is some good info in this thread.

Hi Steve, The other one to look out for is the Roland SC-8850. I got one off eBay a few years ago and was well pleased with it. I saved a search so that it emailed me every time one was advertised ... useful. Had to wait a month or two,but it was well worth it in the end. It came with the original manual, CD and leads, and in a good condition. If you just search on "roland sc" in ebay you should get a fair few hits. JohnG.

is there not a way to convert back to windows xp from windows7 You can run Windows XP & Windows7 on the same computer, though you do need to partition your hard drive to do so.
