a friend has a keyboard that uses floppy discs.he asked me for some files which i put on floppy and gave him the disc. although his computer is reading all the files, some of the files are not coming up on his keyboard. Does anyone have any clues as to why they're not playing?
Thanks for any help Eddie

He'll have to get a floppy that is compitable with both his keyboard and his computer.I think most of the floppies for computer nowadays are high density.I use a Tecnics keyboard that will work with both high density and Double density but to get stuff from my computer to work with my keyboard I have to use Double density. The floppy has to be formatted in my keyboard.Another reason might be the format of the song on the midi,my computer will play format 0 and format 1 on Cakewalk but my keyboard will only play format 0,if he has Cakewalk it's easy to change from 1 to 0.Hope this helps. You can make a HD disk DD by putting tape over the hole in the corner[not the protection one]You then need to formatt it [preferably on your keyboards. Can he see the files or have they dissapeared ?

Good trick that Frank heard about that a few years back too. .....what the guys say seems right ....I suppose theres a few reasons why some won't play......depends on the age of the pc and how the disks were formatted and of course how old the kb is and as was said what type of formatted disks it takes HD or DD format 0 and 1 come into play in the older kb's as well. I gotta box full of commercial floppies here which are no more use to me most of them were formatted on the XP OS and tried a few modern kb's and none of them would play yet some of them would play on older kb's. Bought myself a floppy drive(my pc's floppy is goosed )especially to see if I could get them to play but no luck either . I agree with Frank I'd try format the floppies on the kb then load the troublesome files on again from your pc (if it doesen't ask you to reformat that is )and see how you go although it could turn out be a catch 22 situation as well...... It could be that you have saved too many files on the disc or keyboards and they have only part loaded.Suggest you try saving the problem files individualy on 1 disc and transfer 1 at a time. Second option is to play file from pc into midi in on keyboards and save.

Thanks guys for all your help.I think that formatting is the problem so if i'm understanding right ,you need to format the disc before you put the midifile on to it. and use DD discs. I'll pass on all your suggestions .
Thanks again Eddie

My old Technics KN3000 would only display 10 midi files regardless of how many were on the floppy disc.

Thanks Frankie for the tip of covering the hole,I'll have a go.It's nearly impossible to get DD floppies now.My tecnics is a KN2000 and it will play whatever number of files are on the floppy,But when I'm gigging I have to use a Roland canvas through the keyboard because it's so slow to load.I do this because the sounds from the keyboard are very very good. Hi Barry, It's a Roland SD 35 midi file player,I play it throught my keyboard because it's instant play but I use the keyboard as the slave because the sounds from the keyboard are brilliant. The sounds from the roland are not very good in comparison. They don't make either the Roland or the Kn2000 Tecnics keyboard anymore so when mine packs in I'll go too LOL,but then I'm 68 years young. Ah right with ya .......in the old days Roland had a floppy disk player without sounds called the Sound Brush useless without a sound module though ......I had one and had the Sound Canvas then to get the sounds. Pretty slick in its day and expensive too think they cost about a grand for both..early 90's I think . The sd35 has the 2 in one only downside is that it had no proper display like the canvas has (still using my canvas myself) although like yourself nowadays the sounds from my Yamaha s700 are far superior so mostly use them for my backing tracks these days . Age is only a number not far behind you myself but the music keeps me young dunno what Ill do if I have to retire probably get back songwriting again dont seem to find the time these days ;D Regards Barry
