Hi John Great stuff works fine now thanks.......a question though how did you manage to do this it'd be great if you could briefly run it by me so Id know how to do it myself in future . Also tried to change some of the instruments in tracks 1,3,4,5,6,and 7 with no luck they all seem to be on a diff patch bank . Can't see anything on the events list or in the Sysx view to alter everything seems to be hidden ;D Can you shed some light on it for me thanks again for your help Regards Barry

Hi Barry,
First of all I use XGworks. This program, unlike most others, shows pretty well everything that's in the file in its List View.
So examining the file track by track I found that there were some Bank Select messages (MSB) that called up a GM2 patch bank. I set those to the GM bank (0) and Bob's yer uncle.
Most software doesn't actually display the detail of these messages they're just shown in the track view as an instrument of some kind but without the Bank Select messages.
However ... if you get hold of the latest version of Anvil Studio and, highlighting in track view the track you want to look at, then go to View/Event List you'll see it all mapped out in glorious detail. Actually too much detail for most. But you can change the events by double clicking on them and then entering the new values in the pop up window.
Best of all ... Anvil Studio's a freebie!
Any help? JohnG.

Hi John Thats great so easy really ..isn't it amazing paying hundreds of bucks for a Prog like Sonar and it don't show those messages and Anvil a freebie does .....weird eh ......anyway its sorted now Ill download a copy of Anvil to have in the event of this happening again . Also must get into working with XG it seems to be the full package all in one eh Appreciate your help again thanks John Barry

Hi Barry, My pleasure.
XGworks was the first proper sequencing package I 'got into.' v2 came with the SW1000XG and I very soon upgraded to v3. I've used CWPA9 and now have Sonar 7 PE which is great with soft synths and virtual instruments. But XGw is still the one I use for editing MIDI files, I imagine just because I've been using it for over 10 years and am that familiar with the interface.
I really don't like the way that the various Cakewalk programs hide away voice allocations and sysex messages. To me it makes much more sense to show them or be able to switch on filters so you just see the stuff you want to. Anvil is good at that.
The only thing with XGworks is that it came out before the advent of virtual instruments and so can't handle VSTs. If it did that I'd ditch all the rest.
Have fun, JohnG.
