It's all ole Simmo's fault really!! He innocently asked in one of his recent posts if I'd got room on my wall for a new guitar and I replied that I'd got my eye on one of Trev Wilkinson's most excellent Vintage Icon series guitars ... namely the Vintage V100 Icon Peter Green 'Lemon Drop'. So after searching out all the info on the net and listening to loads of demos on You Tube I was suffering yet another attack of that debilitating condition known as GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) and as everyone knows ... the only cure for this debilitating condition is to give in and make a purchase!! ;D
So, about ten days ago I placed an order over the phone with Digital Village and as I did so I got a really strong mental picture of this lusted after object of desire arriving in a very poorly condition ... maybe it was the fact that the Icon series are manufactured to look aged, battle worn and gig weary or maybe that I know from experience that guitars are often dispatched in a flimsy triangular carton ... or maybe my psychic radar was switched on ... either way I had distinct concerns despite assurances from the shop that it would be packed suitably.
Two days later it arrived and I signed for a huge rectangular carton the size of Yamaha CS80 Synth and five minutes later I was eagerly opening the outer carton and there floating around in this warehouse of an outer container was ... you guessed it ... a triangular carton with the lid raised by 2 inches!! I opened said lid of said carton and .......
aaaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!! Just as I'd pictured in every grisly detail ... the object of my desire lay with the headstock hanging at an impossible oblique angle from the cardboard 'morgue' headrest still encased in it's polystyrene shroud with a large pink rubber band throttling the base of it's once pretty neck ... my Vintage Peter Green Les Paul had been murdered!!!
Further scant investigation revealed further carnage ... the brass nut and tuno-matic bridge lay draped across the beautifully distressed body and were artistically entwined with the six shiny strings ... Pete Townshend couldn't have done a better job!!
But the spooky thing was I had seen all this as I placed the order in all the detail described ... was it Black Magic or Supernatural or just a self-fulfilling prophecy?
Anyway, I phoned Digital Village and arranged for the 'corpse' to be collected and I'm waiting on delivery of the replacement today after receiving a call yesterday that it's on it's way to me.
The Vintage guitar range are beautifully made to pro standard ... I'm just amazed that JHS don't take more care to pack their high quality products with more robust packaging for transit.
This particular model has the same pick-up configuration and wiring as Peter's original ... for those interested here's the spec:
The Vintage 100 Icon Peter Green is an outsatnding value guitar with true blues roots, inspired by Trevor Wilkinson's chance meeting with the legendary Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac.
The Vintage 100 Icon Peter Green features reverse-fitted neck humbucker and out of phase centre position wiring, that helped to create one of the most recognisable guitar sounds of the genre – real “Black Magic”. Differential bell type control knobs, battle scars and sealed gear replacement tuners all add to the mojo....
Vintage 100 Icon Peter Green main features include:
Body: Mahogany
Top: V100CS Flame Maple
Neck: Mahogany – Set Neck
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Scale: 24.75"/ 628mm
Frets: 22
Neck Inlays: Pearloid Crown
Tuners: Wilkinson Deluxe WJ01 Chrome
Bridge: Tune-O-Matic
Pickups: Wilkinson Double Coil x 2 (N) MWVC (B)MWVC
Hardware: Chrome

Peter's original guitar was offered by him, as a gift, to Snowy White who was doing session work for Peter at the time (the White Sky album I believe) but Snowy felt he had to reluctantly decline owing to Peter's fragile mental state at that time. However, Snowy's Thin Lizzy peer, the late and great Gary Moore was also offered the guitar for a very modest sum (not much more than the current price of this copy version) and Gary became the proud owner of this legendary guitar.
Gary used it extensively on many of his recordings. He used it exclusively on his 'Blues For Greeny' album (a tribute to Peter Green's blues catalogue) and Gary was also instrumental in the early stages of Peter's long hard road to recovery and very welcome return to recording and performing again.
So, I've got my Peter Green tab books at the ready and I'm just awaiting delivery ... I'll keep you posted!!
Best regards ... Rainbow:)
