Hi Guy`s, I do apologise but i need to ask a question!!! It would almost seem that our forum has turned into a request only zone, i have noticed a great deal of traffic on the `facebook` page where members are sharing a great deal of info and `pics`which i think would be of great benefit on our forum.I do realise that it is up to each member as to what and when he posts but for me the forum has always been and will continue to be my first[and maybe only]point of focus. I am afraid to say that our forum is in danger of going cold and somewhat `stale`i miss the craic of our good friend shyam and i read with interest his posts on `facebook`and wonder if perhaps he would get a better response on our forum he does have some marvelous pics on facebook. Anyway as John would say just my 2D`s worth

I agree with you on this point weegeo. This is the only forum I am a member of, and whilst I haven't been around as much myself this year (work and family pressures), I have noticed a decline in posting and chats...... As I said, I shouldn't be one to comment too loudly because I too am guilty of not being as active as I have in the past. I hope to remedy this when my holidays commence in 3 weeks. I think (correct me if I'm wrong), that the FB page was established to attract more members to our lil forum. Regards Warren

I think its the Fact that Facebook is so big. I remember when MSN groups and YAhoo Groups were the deal. now correct me if i'm wrong but... This Forum was easier to Find when it was associated with MM.That would explain the lack of new members. as far as people posting I think its just that Facebook is such a popular place to be.

And here's Johnny! Feel the same. But then so many forums I have participated in in the past have gone the same way (is that a jinx?) they just seem to run out of steam. Anyone remember Compuserve? I think that the loss of associated MIDI files has obviously had it's effect. If only the files had been legit and not stolen from commercial providers. Facebook is just the thing of the moment and its popularity will fade too in time no doubt. When I have a little more time I will post another tutorial, this time on the Yamaha XGworks program. I've done the screen shots and partly written the introductory episode, but have just lacked time to complete it. I know, I know, whilst I'm writing this I could have done some more to it. ;D I know many people still use it, or would like to use more of its capabilities, to modify SMFs to play on XG equipment. In my view it's still one of the best and simplest to use for general MIDI files but especially so for getting into the huge sound set and FX that XG devices have to offer. All the best, JohnG.

OK, after reading comments here I decided to adjust the Facebook page. From now on no one will be able to post comments on that page; the hope is that anyone wishing to discuss things will do so here on the actual forum Another thing. I removed all names from the page to clean it up; however, I ask everyone to rejoin as this will let any visitors know we are real people Apologies for the inconvenience.

Pat,
Have you renamed the site ? I used to be linked as a member but cant find it anymore. I did find it useful to post info, photos and links to what members were up to.

No, mate...still the same name. I am not sure I follow you other comment, though. What do you mean "linked as a member?"

Pat,
I meant to say "liked". You have to "like" a site to become a member of that group or page. The Facebook page is no longer appearing in my group or "liked" pages. This may be explained by the post where you say you removed all members and I have to rejoin, but I cant find the page. Whats the group name ?

One area that I think is lacking on this forum is the fact when someone requests file, the only way to get it is to have someone email it to you. Why can't it be attached in the thread. If the file was attached to the thread by someone, everybody would come to the forum to find the file readily available. As is is now the main reason I visit this forum is to see if I can attach a file to someones request, unfortunately, lately I haven't had the file that is being requested.

As has been posted before, the problem is with copyright.
For any files posted the moderators have to be certain that the file is genuinely copyright free / public domain. There is currently no way of making a file permanently read only with the copyright information embedded within it. And we found, in the past, an individual removing the commercial copyright of files, and inserting his own.
If it is then put on a web site it is considered, in law, to be published. The publisher i.e. MIDI hangout, is legally responsible for what appears on the site, whether they put it there or not. So, to be completely legal, every MIDI file that is posted would have to be checked against ALL existing copies of that song to make sure it's okay.
As usual it's only my take on the issue, and I do understand where you're coming from on this. It always was a big part of the attraction of the old site and is, almost certainly, one of the reasons the site is so much quieter. I imagine Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites is another, on which I spend about 0.00001% of my time!
Living in the past! JohnG.

That's it all in a nut shell John and thanks for taking the time to explain again.
The forum does have the facility to upload/attach files directly, but cannot be used for MIDI or any other file if it is copyrighted. It is a bugger, but something we have to live with if we wish to keep the site.
