I think I'll address this to JohnG as he usually has all the answers to such queries. I heard from a friend that I can use Cakewalk to play back a midi file and simultaneously record my voice in an availab;e track. Is this true ? Slap me if this is a silly question, JohnG and I'll relay the slap to my friend !

Nah, Shyam, don't slap him, go shake him by the hand. But it needs to be a "Pro Audio" version of Cakewalk not e.g Cakewalk version 3 which was just MIDI. Whoops, I see from the title that it is! Most reasonable sequencing software from the last ten years or so can do this, providing the hardware allows two way flow of audio, it's called a "full duplex" sound or audio card/interface. Very early cards were "half duplex" or one way at a time. Some laptop sound chips still are, I believe. You need to set an available track so that its properties are set to audio rather than MIDI. A while back I posted the pro audio help file, here's the link again www.4shared.com/file/gFyr_kOU/CWPA9help.html in case you don't already have it. If you look for "recording audio" in it you should find all the help you need for CWPA 9. You need to unzip this file into the Cakewalk Pro Audio program directory and then the "help topics" menu will work. On my system it's c:\program files\cakewalk\CWPA9\. The key thing is to play around with record levels into the computer until you get it right. And remember with digital recordings 0dB is maximum signal level. You should always stay below this level otherwise distortion occurs. Any help? JohnG.

Which bit did you not think of, wee George? Or are you pulling my leg? BTW you should see my exercises with the light sabre, I'm getting pretty proficient now. JohnG. PS. Also don't forget to set up the audio device in the "options/audio..." menu and to use the "wave profiler" to get CWPA set up correctly.
