Thanks so much all,
I think I can safely say that the day will go down as one of the best I can remember in the recent past. Not because anything fantastic happened, but because everyone I care about in the world sent cards and/or phoned, and expressed good wishes.
Susanne and I went out for a quiet lunch in Bonn with a couple of Koelsch (the local brew) and sat out in the glorious sunshine and enjoyed the activities in the Bonn market square, watching the tourists come and go; wandered around town for an hour or so. I spent a little time on the PC and found several more good wishes from some of my students, then went to deliver one of my English classes where we sampled a 16 year old bottle of Scotch I had received as a present.
There's still a little bit left ... anyone?
My son and daughter phoned, then my brother and we spent a quiet evening watching Germany getting beaten by Spain on the box, sampling a little more Koelsch, Susanne's choice.
Much better than 7/7/2005 when I waited half a day before hearing that my daughter wasn't on one of the tube trains that were blown up. What a day that was! What a relief.
And a small clue: "When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now ..."
Thanks once again, JohnG.

Bit late in the day to respond to this,
But thank you very much for your good wishes, Shyam and Gerry. It was indeed a very harmonious (geddit?) day. My lovely lady wife took the day off work and we spent a quiet day together enjoying the sunshine and a rather peaceful Bonn. Such days are good for the soul.
Shyam, I haven't forgotten your invitation to Bangalore and, with a little money, some continuing good health, and the completion of Susanne's "conditioning" into matters Indian we will get to you (I sincerely hope) before too long.
Regarding Susanne's conditioning, I have now gor her eating and enjoying, I might add, curries made to Madras strength. I don't dare take her much further. She thoroughly enjoyed a Peshwari naan the other day. However getting her to appreciate Indian classical music is taking a little longer. I have been gently introducing her to evening ragas, as the more gentle subtle art of Indian music, but I fear she still has a long way to go.
She is firmly routed in the European classical tradition. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms.
All the best to you both, Thanks again, JohnG.
