I was in Florida over the New Year period and happened to be watching a great performer in a bar in Key West who was playing his backing tracks through his laptop direct to an active pa system. On the floor he had what looked like a midi pedalboard which had footpads marked 1 to 10, what looked like bank up/down, and two foot pedals (for volume, effects?) On pressing certain foot-pads he got different echo or loop effects for certain parts of the songs and it sounded very good. I had a quick chat with him to ask what he was using but he didn't enlighten me very much. Does anyone know just what set-up he might have been using here and was he really making all the changes with a midi pedalboard? Ken

Hi Tubbs, thanks for that but it's not so much the equipment on the floor that intrigues me, more how it all works. For instance: You have files (midi, mp3 or other?) playing on a laptop through a media player I suppose. Now how does the midi controller interact to affect the playback sounds. Is any programming involved or preparing of presets? I would think you would need an effects unit capable of accepting midi signals to give pre-set effects. I didn't think a laptop alone could accomplish this.

Kenja, subscribe to the newsgroup...alt.music.makers.soloact..... Ask there. Some members from Florida and you may find the guy you was talking too. Even so they are pretty clued up on that sort of stuff.

It's highly likely, Ken, that he was using something like the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI Foot Controller. www.behringer.com/EN/Products/fcb1010.aspx. You can find manuals and details about presets etc on this site. You have to program in presets for your various bits of equipment and probably for a sound module. Or maybe he was using VST instruments and effects and switching them in and out via MIDI. Difficult to say without a bit more info about his setup. JohnG.

Hi John Having checked the Behringer myself I think I can confirm that this was the floor pedal. However he only had a laptop so could he have been using music software with the midi pedal? I have heard mention of "Ableton Live" in this context but don't know much about it. I will need to look it up forthwith. Ken

Hi Ken,
Ableton Live is a distinct possibility. It does allow for loops etc. and as it supports VST it may be that it can be used to switch VST effects in and out. I suspect they can all be triggered by MIDI.
