Hi gang, I hope you all had a great Christmas and are already benefiting from this bright [cold ;D] New Year. My two boys are making wonderful progress on their guitars; we bought them a couple of cheap Fender copies for Christmas and they are really into playing them. Actually they have been playing now for nearly 6 months, using acoustic guitars. And, it was on the strength of their progress and their enthusiasm that we got the “Fenders” for them. To make a long story short they have formed a bit of a band. Crazy I know, but these two [Aaron is only ten, and Sean fourteen] already play along to most of my regular gigging set; they have all the chords off to a tee. What they need now is a drum machine. A real drummer would be better, but for now a machine would do the job. I was looking around on the net for a free one to down load so it could be used on the laptop [through the PA] but could find nothing useful. What they’d really like is something easy with a few presets for Country, Rock and roll, etc. So, if any of you guys know of such a device available for free, please let me know. Cheers. Pat

Hi Pat,
Ever thought of loading the song they want to play into the sequencer, or MIDI file player, e.g. vanBascoes, muting all the tracks you don't want i.e. all except the drums, and playing through whatever sound card / module you already have?
Any good? Just my 2d as usual. JohnG.

Hi John, good to hear from you. I did actually think about that but those files have the drums for specific songs, the drum rolls would come in at the wrong times, etc. But thanks for the suggestion all the same.

Hi Pat I think they'd be better off with an actual physical machine than software they'd have much more control over their practise sessions. If you have no luck you could try this site which is totally free and people give away all kinds of unwanted goods totally free you can also request items .I've seen stranger things than drum machines requested here ;D but you never know ...all you need to do is register first......regards Barry www.jumbletown.ie/forums/index.php

Thanks everyone for your input.
James [Maverick] mate, if you find that drum machine I can guarantee a good home for it. Many years ago I had one; this was when I use to gig with just a guitar, no backing whatsoever, just me, the guitar and a drum machine. I had some of the best gigs ever back in the day with that thing. It was an old Boss; at least I think it was. This was back in the 80’s. Anyway, if you can find your machine that would be great.
Barry, you are right about having a unit you can hold and work that way, but if I can’t get one of them, then the cheaper alternative is one that can be downloaded from the net, and preferably a free one. I will check out the link you gave and see what the craic is there.
Tiny [Tom] I did think about the keyboard, and I do still have my keyboard but that thing is a tonne in weight and takes up a lot of space when set up, so something smaller and more convenient, or something that can be used on the laptop would be the ideal way to go
Gerry [Tubbs] thanks for the link but it isn’t really what I am hoping for the boys, which is something easy to use, with a few presets for Country, Rock, etc. But thanks all the same.

The drum machine arrived and is working the finest; no waltzes, but has everything else the boys could use at this stage, so is proving a real winner here in the house. This machine has found a new home with the lads and has already become a firm member of their little band ;d The boys asked me to say a huge thanks to Maverick for his wonderful generosity and will remember him when they become famous.....they actually did say that. ;D
