I am using a Laptop on a temporary basis. Its brand new...Compaq.
I usually edit my Midis on a PC, as I have Cakewalk installed there. I then transfer the files to the Laptop. Problem Ive found in two Midis....drums perfect on PC, both in Cakewalk, and Vanbasco, yet when I transfer to Laptop, one of the Midis keeps dropping some drumbeats, and the other...well no drums at all.
Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening???

Dont think so Tommy. One of these is a Midi by a well known company, and I have no problem with some of their other Midis.

Probably the amount of notes played at one time.Maybe the chip in the laptop 8 notes poly.Try running a sound module off the laptop and see what happens.

Thanks Barry....sent them to your mail.
By way of followup....I have an old Roland RA90 Realtime Arranger. I use to use it when processing files for transfer to Minidisk. It does not have a USB port, but I could buy a USB to Midi Cable. I also use a Creative Soundblaster Card for the laptop. I could buy a Jack to Midi Cable and take it from the card to the Arranger, and then to Mixer. Is it likely that any of these options might solve the problem.
Presently, I am using a laptop temporarily, but intend buying one to dedicate to gigging. I dont want to end up with the same situation.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jerry,
My own take on this would be to go for a second hand laptop, one with XP already installed. You should be able to pick up something quite good for a hundred quid or less. At that price you could get two the same so you have a ready supply of spares. Make sure it comes with its XP discs. Wipe the hard disk and reinstall XP, then the MIDI programs you need.
XP is so stable with MIDI, whereas I hear no end of people having problems with 7.
I tried typing in "laptop XP" into eBay under "laptops and netbooks" and it came up with 745 laptops to choose from. Okay it probably won't have a warranty but it'll cost maybe a fifth of a decent up-to-date one.
You just don't need a quad core processor and however many terrabytes of hard disk and gigabytes of RAM for MIDI. (nor bl@@dy windoze 7) Total overkill and a waste of money IMHO.
I run a windows 2000 laptop I bought in 2001 with a 750 Mhz processor and 256 MB of RAM to drive 3 expansion boxes (2 Yamaha MU1000s, with internal expansion cards, and a Roland SC8850) all at the same time. 6 ports of MIDI out (up to 96 channels) and audio back in, all via USB, without a single glitch.
But it's only my 2d worth as usual. JohnG.

John
This makes sense. My old laptop ran Win2000, and I never had a problem like this one.
My sincere thanks to Tommy, Frankie, and Barry for trying to assist.
Barry...will try them out later.

Jerry As far as I can make out frank could be right about the amount of notes that your laptop chip can handle(and mine actually). I ran a sound module from my laptop and had no problem with the file most of my midis will play fine on my laptop but sometimes you come across the odd midi with so many notes coming at once it can't handle it and this seems to be the case with one of those files. At measure 7 -8 there seems to be a lot of events occuring and that could be causing your drums to drop out . Thats my opinion anyway maybe JohnG Frank or someone else can come up with some other explanation I wouldn't say your Operating System would be the cause of this though.....lets wait up and see sorry can't be of anymore help. Regards Barry
