If they are finished maybe midihangout will pick up a few new members. It always seemed to be well subscribed. I know a few members from this site went on the fresh midi site as well. If anyone knows the reason why, perhaps they could let us know. I have my suspicions as to the reason why though.

Barry Looking through some of the files on the site, there were definately some that were commercially produced tracks. I won't state which tracks or from which company, but they were definately there. They are note for note copys of ones that I have. I used to look on the site from time to time and they did however have some very good midis that were self produced.

And therein lies the problem of including files that don't have a good provenance.
Where the text or copyright Meta Data has been removed from the file or, as was the case with our previous association, the ownership was replaced and the melody line removed in an attempt to fake that the file had been sequenced by the provider.
There are literally thousands of files out there that have had this or similar treatment. If we include them we risk being sued by the copyright holder. That is also why the list should require password access, i.e. they would not be 'fully' in the public domain.

John
I thought the freshmidis site had password access before you could download a file. I guess until someone connected with the site tells us the reason we are all playing a guessing game. Does not being in the public domain just rely on access via a password? Seems a bit loose to me, any Lawyers out there?

Hi Ian,
Actually I was never really 'into' freshmidis so can't truthfully say say much about the site or how it was accessed. But of course the site associated with the old forum was accessed by membership, and I believe that was viewed as being public I suppose, although the real problem was that a charge was being made for other people's property.
I'm not a lawyer, but I'm guessing that putting anything on the internet is like publishing in a newspaper and is considered as being put into the public domain.
My main point really was about making sure anything we did put up had a clear provenance of being authored by someone who intended the work to be publicly available. I f it had no provenance then it should be excluded, simply because there are so many rip-offs.

Regarding FreshMIDIs, Here's a link to another site where I have been involved for many years and more recently was given moderator then administrator status because others were 'moving on'! It may throw some light upon the reasons behind the site closure. I won't quote it here, just provide the link. www.midiworld.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2914#2914. The writer claims to have been a moderator, I have no way of proving or disproving his/her claims but I feel inclined to believe him/her. This merely reinforces my view about any ideas of hosting MIDI files on an associated web site. They must have a clear provenance from a sequencer who puts their work in the public domain. And, let me make it clear, I'm NOT about to give up my work here or start writing tutorials etc. for the Music Forum. My home is here. JohnG.

Hi there ........ Well now, that's interesting! I shall be watching that poster closely and no mistake. He/she has an interesting e-mail address that gives away nothing about his (or her) identity. Maybe you'd like to PM me separately about anyone to watch out for. JohnG.
