They usually use your sound cards MIDI sounds. If you can't tell the program to use something else for the sounds then, Those converters won't be much good. I can't tell you if any of the ones you've purchased can be set up differently. If they can, and you haven't sent them up to use your sounds, then they won't do a good job.
If none of them can do that then you really need to do it the 'hard' way, with a sequencer playing the file through whatever sound module/s or virtual sounds that you use and record them into an audio program. A decent DAW, like Cakewalk or Cubase should do it just fine.
My set up is a bit odd. It consists of my sequencing program, (Record Producer Pro) computer with a Creative X-Fi sound card (Yeah I know it's not pro but it works for what I need) a midi/audio interface that works with the sound card, Adobe Audition, and the sound module I use (Ketron SD2).
I do all of my editing/mixing of my files in the sequencing program, set up my windows mixer to "record what you hear', which is a feature of Creative Sound cards and record at CD quality in Audition. I do a test recording first to make sure levels don't peak and distort and set the levels in Audition. After I have it recorded and if I want it as an MP3, I convert it in Audition.

Hi JazzCat, Thanks for the reply and info,I haven't bought any of the converters because they are no good, they have soundfonts of thier own so you can't use your own sound card.I've been recording into a good tape recorder from my playing gear, and then recording into a program called Nero on my computer where I can edit the songs the way I want They have been first class. The problem is the heat has got to my tape recorder and finished it off.I got new rubber bands on the drives but no good.I'm just looking for another way that's not going to cost me a fortune. The program Nero is very good by the way and so is Audacity. All the Best Geordie

Doesn't your playing gear have audio outs??? It would have to or you couldn't plug it into a PA system. Sounds like all you need is a decent audio interface to plug your unit into. They aren't THAT expensive. That way you bypass the tape deck altogether, and go straight into the computer. Another advantage to that is you won't have tape hiss any more.

Oh man! Ya gotta get the equipment and the computer in the same room. The way you've got it now is like having the tiolet in one room and the device to flush it in your next door neighbor's house. LOL!
Your equipment would fair better in the house anyway. The temperature extremes in a garage aren't exactly the best thing for musical gear.

Hi Geordie, Sorry, missed this one. Have you taken a look at Synthfont? www.synthfont.com/. There's also a three page tutorial accessible from the main site. The great thing about this little program is that you can try out loads of different sound fonts until you find the one that suits you. There are loads of suggested sources for the sound fonts. The author also has software that allows you, not only to create your own sound fonts, but also to assemble various sounds into your own font, which really allows you to tweak everything to your own taste. Synthfont is a player which also allows you to play it to file. i.e. make a .wav file out of it. mp3 converters are two a penny but the one I use is RazorLame. So far I've always got better results by using separates. Your mileage may vary of course. As usual just my 2d worth. JohnG.

Hi Geordie Mixcraft is a very big download ok but an excellent prog nonetheless as well as Soundfonts . But If you just wanna convert midis to wav/mp3 Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 can do it quite easy I use it sometimes and I'm happy enough with results ...its also quick and very straightforward and providing you have a decent enough soundcard it should do the job just fine . I have it working fine under Win 7 not sure what OS your using though. I could organise a copy for you if you want its not a very big download zipped just under 10mb even with dial up it shouldnt take too long to download....just another option let me know ok Cheerz Barry

Hi Barry, I have Windows XP and I also have Cakewalk Pro Audio 9,I have had that version for a few years but I didn't know it can convert midi to wave or mp3.Since you told me I have looked but can't figure out how you do it.I've looked in the help files but can't see anything about converting. If you could let me know what help file to look at or what way to do it I would be very thankful.I only use midis for gigging,I just want to convert the midis for something to do. Cheers Geordie
