Hi everyone
In order to make an informed decision I wonder if members could say what they use themselves or what they would recommend in terms of computer midi software?
I have only really heard of Cakewalk and Cubase as major programs but there must be many more.
Please help to clear my mind on this issue before I spend good money on the wrong thing.
Regards..KenJA

Hi Ken,
My own take on this is "it depends what bit of MIDI hardware or software you're trying to control"!
E.g. for any piece of Yamaha kit that supports XG format there's nothing to beat XGworks if you can get hold of a copy (no longer sold). If you want to control VST instruments then Steinberg Cubase is probably the best bet. But for a good all round sequencer that does MIDI well and has audio capabilities too then I'd support the last suggestion CakeWalk SONAR. If you can get hold of a copy of the LE (lite) version you probably won't be disappointed.
Just my 2d! JohnG

Hi I don't want to control any gear, I just want to produce and/or manipulate midi files. KenJA

Gerry, someone else (a friend in London UK) mentioned to me the effectiveness of the Sonic Cell as an aid to gigging musicians who use either MIDI or MP3 backing but it wasn't until I saw a demonstration of it capabilities on video did I really grasp the genius of such a devise. As we say down here, "Tis a great yoke." That video is available from here; ftp.roland.co.uk/Videos/SonicCell/videos.html NB: the above needs to be copied & pasted.

I use an old programme for Midi editing called MAGIX Midi Studio. Very user friendly and easy to get around. You might still find a copy in the bargain bin in your local computer shop Here is the Sonic Cell Demo trailer that Pat referred to above: ;D

Yeah, it really is a great yoke Pat!! It produces the most realistic sounds from Midi that i have heard!! I used minidisc before and their really is no comparison when gigging IMO.

Well, I'm definitely sold. How much are they going for? If it's relatively new to the market it might be costly but what price do you put on something that delivers such exceptional sound quality, eh

Ouch indeed! But I can't think of another device on the market that has all those great sounds built in, plus a good effects processor, connectivity for guitar or mic (+phantom power), USB computer connect, support for memory sticks, the list goes on and on. It also comes with a copy of SONAR LE. If you download the user manual (almost 300 pages) you can find out just what it does. Here it is as a zipped pdf: www.4shared.com/file/103488026/47764841/SonicCell_e2.htmlSorely tempted but lacking the funds! JohnG

I hear you John Thanks, by the way, for the link to the manual, which reinforces the scope of this very handy gadget.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible with the sonic cell to change the set list on the fly, as from what I can see, once you programme the order of the songs on the unit, that is the order that you have to do them on stage. I like to change my song list on the go as you never know until you see an audience what they are going to want.
