I use an IPOD for gigging and I think its good. I use an older 3g 15 gig. i set up my sets as playlists and have a 10 min blank song between each. when the first is done it starts the next whixh is the blank. I like the convenience of the small size, I use a free program called Trans manager instead od I tunes to load the IPOD. I love having access to all of my tunes and don;t need to worry if it accidently drops to the floor due to some drunkin clod cuz they are pretty tough...unlike dropping a laptop.....just my 2 cents.

Oh man talk about drunken idiots...........Sat and Sun I had someone knock over my mini disk player didnt hit the ground thankfully just managed to hold on to it on both occasions .......but would you believe one of my mini disks containing about 50 songs was damaged sat night so it was moreorless held together with sellotape .......and guess which mini disk hit the floor sun night ?........you guessed it the same disk so the disk itself actually left the casing and rolled onto the floor this time . Lucky enough I was just about finished my gig but decided thats it Im switching to ipod after this I realise this could have happened with an ipod just as easy, but even if the sd card/usb stick had been damaged at least its only matter of copying over the songs again in a matter of minutes compared to hours on minidisk........ By the way the first girl that knocked it over was just asking me to play a song on stage and she lost her footing high heels ya know. and the second guy just fainted in front of me .....the effect I have on people eh....... ;D Barry

I have to admit ignorance re these Ipods...etc. Im not a fan of Mobile phones of any type.....too much radiation.
However....can anyone tell me if its possible to play Midis on this. I have become used [ wrongly I know] to having Lyrics displayed [in case of emergency....I find my memory is only a fraction of what it used to be] If Lyrics could be displayed....Id consider it, as Im currently using a laptop, and have no backup.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi Jerry. Midi files can't be played on ipods they'd need to be converted to mp3/wav first which depending on the amount of midis you got is a pretty big job. But as far as I'm aware once you've converted your midis you can then through itunes add lyrics to your songs on most standard ipods Thats a pretty neat little machine on franks link but pricey for me anyway ..... Cheerz Barry

I even put a link to it on this Forum for comments. Given the amount of Gigs available here, in this recession, I just cannot justify the cost of it. I wish I could, as it would solve all my problems. .

Hi Barry, just another option i have just tried out with regard to your prob with working with an ipod for your backing tracks,(the screen is to small) as you know i did mention that i was using a portable dvd player with a usb input facility on it in which i insert a usb memory stick which has my mp3 backing tracks on and connecting the dvd unit via audio cable to my bose dock station, this is for when i am busking,i forgot to mention that i do not actually use my ipod at all,i connect the dvd player via an audio cable direct into the audio input in the bose, this enables me to get a quality sound. In your situation because you have no need for a battery powered portable dvd player as you would be able to have mains power available at all your gigs,so a normal portable dvd player on mains would be ok.I have just connected my portable dvd up to my PA system using a single connector lead from audio output out of the player and then into two separate ( red & black) connectors into(,in my case) two separate channels on the PA mixer & the quality of the sound was amazing,i suppose the fact that i have edited the midifiles to suit myself using Sonar le plus picking up the goodie sounds from my Sonic Cell module & then put them into mp3 format, this has come through to the sounds that are coming through my PA.The sounds from the dvd player when used normally are very average. The upside is that you now have a dvd screen approx 6" x4" in front of you with each page displaying at least six tracks at a time which either with a remote or manually you can scroll down very quickly.Lastly have about 100 tracks loaded on the memory stick & i am sure that the dvd player will take a lot more.Hope i have explained it well enough but i know that you are a real whizz on all of this stuff by the amout of times you have come to my rescue over the period i have been a hangout member.this info may be of help to other members of the forum.i use a program called" razor lame" in which i put my wav files into mp3 format, you can do them in batches,John G put me on to them,it is a great programme .phew!!!! thats it from Simmo for now

plus picking up the goodie sounds from my Sonic Cell module Hi Simmo, Why don't you just use the Sonic Cell to play your backing tracks live? Seems like a lot less hassle Cheers John

Hi JC,good question mate, only thing is the viewing window on the sonic cell is only about 4cm x 2cm which for an old fart like myself is #*+@#!!! unreadable!!! ,thanks for suggestion though...i actually use for my oldies gigs where mains power is not a problem a unit called an Mblaster 2 which i have been using for about four years hassle free which is a midifile/mp3 player, the only difference is the price tag...$900 against around $140 for a reasonable portable dvd player''when i bought the Mblaster the portable dvd's with usb inputs were hard to find or not available,if i had the choice now i would certainly opt for the dvd option as it certainly does the job.For my busking the battery powered dvd player is certainly more versatile than using the ipod due to having the larger viewing window. Ole Simmo..still experimenting. PS.. how is life in your part of the country..we could certainly use some of the rain you have been getting

I have to admit a portable DVD player is pretty ingenious! Haven't had much rain lately, hoping it holds off tomorrow I've got an outdoor gig....

:)Hi Baden,re your query,"what would you use as a moniter"i'm not quite sure what you meant when you mentioned this in your post, when i load the mp3 tracks from the computer on to the memory stick each song has a number & title eg,( 01 cheating heart) etc which is the order they are displayed on the dvd screen,in my case the screen displays six song titles at a time & i usually have the player sitting on a small stand which is easy to see & operate while at the gigs, you can then easily either manually or with a remote (which all of the players come with) scroll down to each individual song or if you hold the button down it will scroll through them from start to finish in seconds,it is a bit like operating a mini laptop computer.I hope i got your query correctly if not let me know.. Simmo
