I had a situation last night that I will be able to dine on for a few years. The band I play in were booked to do a surprise 50th birthday party in Downside, Surrey. All was going well 3/4 of the way through the first set, when I decided to go for a walk through the crowd halfway through a song, I walked up to the nearest table and sat down next to a guy sitting there with his wife and friends. During a lead break I gestured to the guy to take the plectrum out of my hand and to play the guitar. He smiled at me, put his hand in his pocket and pulled out about 20 plectrums and put them back in his pocket, but refused to play the guitar. I wandered back to the rest of the band and continued the set. During the break I approached the man and asked if he played the guitar and he said he did a bit, I asked if he was currently playing and he said at the moment he was not as he was too busy doing other things. I asked him why he carried plectrums around if he was not playing and he answered that he was the tour manager of the band 'The Charlatans', and their guitarist was always losing his plectrums so he had to carry them around for him. He was also the guitarist in the 1970's band ' Eddie and the hot rods' who had chart success with some punk songs.
I wondered if any other people have amusing stories to tell along these lines.

Great story Ian. When i played in the groups around about 1965,we were playing at an American airbase in Edzell ( about 40miles from Aberdeen ) This guy with an american accent comes up and asks if he could do a number with the band. What do you play? asked our vocalist. Anything said the guy. He proceeded to play lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, drums, and he was very good at everything. Our vocalist had a chat with him at the end (while we minnions packed up the gear and loaded the van). He said he played with the Temptations and was almost finished his national service before going back to join the band. No-one has ever proved this and there was no way of ckecking so i'm still a bit sceptical, but a very, very talented guy, whoever he was.

These are the incidents we will treasure all our lives. The humility of these "BIG" stars is what makes the moment so beautiful and worth treasuring !

I remember doing an impromptu session here in Ireland and this guy joined us with his banjo. I thought he was too loud and drwning out the session, and I tried to discourage him and asking him to maybe give the banjo a rest for a while. Turned out he was none other the a member of "Unt 4 plus 2" and I only discovered this when I asked him what was the chord he was using in the song "Concrete and the Clay". Well I was mortified. Anyway to this day were the best of pals, I seek him out when I'm gig'n down his neck of the woods and to be honest it was only my ego at the time that led me to the initial conclusion.
