Hi guys I covered this proccess in Cakewalk Pro Audio a while back but a few of you would like to know how its done in Sonar . I tried this in Sonar Home Studio 7 but I'm sure it should work in all Sonar editions. Here's what I done . First off make sure Sonar is assigned to open your midis (right click on midi/properties/general/and where it says open with you should have Sonar in there if not just click and change it. Open your midi in Sonar Insert /Audio Track you'll see the Audio Track inserted below the midi tracks. Click on your Audio Track it should change colour but it'll be a diff one then the midi tracks. Now click the record button on that track it should change colour (mine's orange). Before hitting the main recording button play the midi as normal and see if you have some activity in your Audio Track if yes then your ready to go if not we can return to this part. When your ready hit the main record button on the top making sure that your Audio track is also set to record as before. When finished recording hit the stop button or it'll still be recording until the small hours ;D Make sure everything is rewound to the start before the conversion otherwise you'll only get a partial or no conversion. Next we need to mute all the midi trax you'll see the "m" alongside the rec button. Highlight the Audio track hit File /Export /Audio and save to wave mp3 etc. make sure you save it to a location you'll find easy enough like "Desktop" or Music etc. So thats it basically as I said earlier if your getting no sound into Sonar this obviously won't work so we can revisit if there's any probs. Hope this is of some help to anyone and any questions Ill do my best to help. Rgds Barry

Hi Barry just tried it, but I get nothing showing on the monitor meter so I'm going nowhere yet! The buttons do go orange, but nothing changes in the audio channel shich I assume you see something when it records in there? Does the audio channel still have to be left set the same as the midi in and outs? in the settings

Jacqui Can you see the inputs/outputs of your soundcard like my pic ?? No Jacqui the midi ins and outs are different altogether you should just see your soundcard on the Audio Track if not just click and change them or If you go into Option/Audio/General the first 2 boxes should have your S/Card listed in Playback Timing Master and your Record Timing Master these need to be setup before you can get sound into Sonar . Hi Barry, excellent advice on the Wav to Mp3 using cakewalk Sonar discussion, our John G also set me off in the right direction when I was getting into this process, it really had me tearing my hair out at that time, ( come to think about it I didn't actually have a lot to tear out ...nothing has changed ),the Sonar cakewalk programme I am using for some reason doesn't have this facility to make the Wav to Mp3 changes,I did go through your instructions but a message came up telling me that I would have to unlock I think it was called an encoder or get another one.It doesn't bother me as John put me onto a different Wav to mp3 converter called RAZORLAME which I find works great, you can do the conversion in batches as well,John assured me that it is the one he uses himself. The other thing I do myself before recording the midi to wav in the same way that you have described is to check that the metronome function is turned off ( or unticked ) you can get at it by going to the tool bar at the top of the screen by clicking Options/Project/Metronome,if you record with it on you will have a regular tick tick all of the way through your recording process which will come through on the finished conversion.Hope this bit of info is of use to the member. Best wishes to all........ Simmo

Hi Terry I'm sure you meant Midi to Mp3 ;D Yes good advice on using the Metrenome can save a lot of time for sure. Yes I notice some of the versions of Sonar you needed to unlock(buy) the Cakewalk mp3 encoder but just download the Lame encoder/ RazorLame as you say Terry its excellent and free as well. Thanx for that tip about the Metrenome . Barry

Hi Barry Just gone back on this again tonight, I finally managed to get something to show on the level meter and start to record, but when I tried to save as MP3 I got this message...... Unable to launch MP3 encoder application, do you know what that's about? also if you record and you make a mistake, how do you start again, do you delete that audio track and insert a new one, or can you go over that track again? Jacqui

Hi Jacqui Yes as I said before with some versions of Cakewalk/Sonar you need to unlock/buy their encoder . But you can download the Lame Encoder free and then intergrate it into Sonar so it'll be there permanently . Below is the proceedure for installing it . lame-mp3-encoder.soft32.com/1. Download and install the lame encoder. Just search 'lame mp3 encoder download' in Google 2. Open Sonar 4 etc and go to Tools -> Cakewal Ext. Encoder Config. 3. In the Friendly Name Field write: Lame Mp3 Encoder 4. In the Extension field write: .mp3 5. In the Description field write whatever you want 6. In the Path field write the path where the Lame encoder is. That is where lame.exe and lame_enc.dll are, usually C:\Program Files\Lame 7. In the Command Line field write: lame -b 192 -m j %I %O 8. Press Save button. 9. Uncheck Keep Wave File 10. dat'sit! Glad to hear your getting sound now don't worry if you make a mistake recording Audio just delete the recording and re-record again on the same track. Let me know how it goes ok Rgds Barry

Hi Barry Went to that link downloaded the file but it only has 30 days free, then it's £30, can't seem to find a free one anywhere, did you have to install it on the version you have or did you find an encoder? Jacqui

Jacqui Lame is a Freeware Prog you don't have to pay for that are you sure its not Winzip your getting confused with ?? Try it again and make sure you don't download any of the offers that pop up in the installation just "Decline". If it is Winzip and the trial has expired you'll need to download another version. www.winzip.com/downwz.htmIf you still have no luck John and Terry reccomended Razorlame which is also very good not sure if it can be installed in Sonar though. www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/convert_audio/razorlame.cfm Barry

lame-mp3-encoder.soft32.com/Hi Barry it was this one you had the link to, I opted out of the other offers as they came up and only got the mp3encoder, but once it was installed in the Cakewalk drive and I selected to run it, that's when it said it was a 30 day trial, I have winzip to extract files already. Jacqui Here's an official download site for Lame that other one must have been a dud you don't ever need to pay for that prog sorry about that . Make sure you delete the old one first otherwise you could have issues and reboot to be sure . sourceforge.net/projects/lame/
